I was reading J's thread about his band's new upcoming album on iTunes, and it made me think about bands who have done the DIY thing and come up with a quality result.

Hi Phillip,
Hope your new year is rocking so far. How's the PhD coming?

Thom! Hopefully about 6 more months! Then into the real world. How's things at Sensaphonics? PS I have a tear in the silicone of my right ear ER15s. You guys have a recommended glue? My ear canals, as you know, are so stinking small there's just not enough material in one spot, and it tore.

As you know, my place does almost exclusively "under the radar DIY stuff".

Yup! Listening to the rock record now... The decision to let the singer's voice take up so much of the midrange against the guitars is interesting. Kind of a Jeff Buckley vibe.

"Quality"? I dunno - but like any DIY project, if the "do-er" is satisfied, we all should be, eh? Some of these songs are many years old.

I guess by quality i mean acceptable and appropriate performances, no obvious engineering decision mistakes, mixes that make sense. It doesn't all have to be "big pop" but since that sound can be tough to achieve, I give cred to bands that get there.

Take good care, Phil - still using E2?

Sold the replacement pair you got me ages ago, to another GT student, after my 7506s walked off at a gig. Needed good cans more than the ears. I really liked the E2s, ignoring that the top octave was completely not there. Great single driver product for the money, if you added a bit of low/low mid eq to them.
