MXL 990 == MXL 603s ?
« on: May 17, 2004, 04:17:06 PM »

I heard that the MXL 990 has the same capsule as the MXL 603S.  Are the electronics (preamplifier) the same?

What is the sound difference?  Certainly the grille/headshell has a significant effect on the sound of the mic even if the diaphragm is identical, right?

Thanks,
Josh

Josh,

Yes, they use the same capsules (KM84 based) and circuit (Schoeps based). The difference is in acoustical properties of capsule mounts. In MXL990 the capsule is mounted on rather big brass ring, which changes acoustical responce--that's why they sound different. I have modded 603 and mere change of parts for better quality ones improves its sound a lot. Also, it is worth experimenting to bypass external voltage multiplyer for polarization bias, if you want less hyped top end and bigger bass.
