Must be That time of year...or the phases of the moon

Our Benchmark DAC-1 developed a noisy potentiometer about a week ago and yesterday in the middle of a session the right channel in our Bryston 4BST decided to go dead after some fizzles and pops.

Wonderful. We are really busy and I have to send two pieces of needed equipment back for repairs......Luckily they are both pro pieces and I know I will get them back in better than new condition.

Just had to vent!

One of the reasons I made it a bench converter with vari-out bypassed and the XLR's trimmed for +4.

i did not know that dac-1 had a pot.
perhaps a vca would be a better
choice for high end gear?

Now the DAC-1 in our other studio has developed a problem where it will not turn all the way off. Before I sent off the first DAC I popped the cover and looked inside. The size of the potentiometer really surprised me it is only slightly bigger than a 3/8" cube. It is a very tiny volume control with a very big shaft and knob on it. I wonder if that could be some of the problem. I am really glad I got my DAC-1 the sound is FANTASTIC and Benchmark is the most professional company I know of when it comes customer service. I just wish they would figure out a way to end this problem. This is the second time this DAC has been back for the same problem.

mine's been noisy since i got it. no big, but it's mildly annoying. i think i'm going to replace it with another lavry DA10...as nice as the benchmark sounds, the lavry is much better IMO.

Yah, not sure why anyone would use a potentiometer if they didn't have to...

At first, I thought, how very cool, I can have a minimalist setup with AES in, converter, power amp, speakers. No home preamp.

But weeks after arrival, it developed the crunchyness.

I shot it full of "spray and pray" and it's calmer now.
Til next time, lol.

Big selling point for the unit; high quality sound, lots of flexible features, but at a low cost.

So maybe the moving parts are the weak link.

I use the input switch on the front to toggle between AES and S/P-DIF sources... we'll see how long that holds.

However I only use the big knob for headphones, main out is via the calibrated outputs.

Had it for about 14 months, so far it's is super quiet, no problema.

And the humidity here in Austin is generally torturous to pots & switches.
