couch between speakers...bad idea?
« on: December 06, 2007, 06:21:46 PM »

I´m rebuilding my studio and kinda running out of space to fit my couch in because
I´m moving more away from the frontwall with the listening position. the only free space would be on the frontwall between the speakers:

index.php/fa/6899/0/

should I discard the Idea for acoustical reasons? I´m not talking about the
the sound impression when sitting on the couch...the couch is just there
for clients surfing the web with their laptops while I work  Rolling Eyes
I remember reading somewhere to leave the space between the speaker "pure air"
if so, why?

btw, the speaker are floorstanders...if that matters...

thx, steff

would it be possible to include dimensions of the room and the main bits of furniture? monitor types, and whatever acoustic treatments you already have in place? or planning?

depending on your room, monitors, and desk, the monitors might be placed too far apart with the couch in the middle. any absorption/reflections by the couch, and people on it, shouldn't be a big problem.

What happens behind the speakers matter much less than in front of them because they don't face that way. Except when the speakers are dipoles. So I'm sure that will be fine from your main listening perspective.

it will definitely help to add the bass trapping. using the Barefoot wall reflection calculator, it does look like you might have a 2db dip starting around 80hz with the speakers out about 1m. overall room modes look good. it will be interesting to see the measurement results.

thanx guys!

there´s on more thing: the room has an angular wall like this
index.php/fa/6958/0/

symmetry was ok with the previous setup (mixroom)

bass collects predominantly in the right rear corner. I assume this is THE place
for a monstertrap?  Very Happy

will post measurement results asap

ok the fun begins.

did some quick measurements. no cornertraps. various speakerpositions.
left speaker only. 110x80cm means 110cm from sidewall, 80cm from frontwall (measured from speakerfront)
I didn´t have a real measuring mic handy, so I used my 414...good enough to see some peaks and dips and get a basic idea what´s going on here Smile

http://www.diygallery.de/forum/messungen/Bild2.jpg

looks like we got ringing at 20Hz, 45Hz, and 150Hz
the massive dip between 50 and 60Hz is moving with speaker positions, so I guess this is coming from boundary relfections?

next week massive corner trap diy. time to clean up this mess!

btw....the N802s sound awesome..even in this crappy environment Very Happy

hey Fran, SMAART is now available (v. Cool for Mac...I have just downloaded it and interface looks streamlined and nice.
FuzzMeasure also looks...well, groovy, and I've just been playing with it for a week but seems to do all the stuff--and do it accurately.

the ringing is likely due to the room dimensions. so building that trap should help.

For Windows there's ETF ($150) and Room EQ Wizard (freeware). Google will find both for you.

Yeah. I've been chatting with MG about his recent Mac purchase... man... what is the world coming to...Neither of us owns a studio and he's got a Mac and I'm actually considering one!! There is some type of unbalance in the cosmos, I guess.

I've been considering a Mac purchase for some time... the fact that I can run: AutoCAD, TEF (it appears), Smaart and some other very cool stuff that is Mac-only, is just starting to make my mind up for me...
