Sound barrier material?
« on: August 02, 2009, 06:24:53 PM »

I recall seeing a spec on material that acts as a sound blocker-- perhaps an Owens Corning product-- that I will need to put in between drywall and the wall behind it.

Can anyone help here?

ASC makes dampening squares and sheets of material to hang behind drywall.

We used Green Glue between drywall and hung the drywall on ASC dRSC. Works perfectly!

My 10 cents: Just put up another layer of drywall... when properly installed this will provide a higher stc and be a lot cheaper than the barrier materials. There are good ways to use these materials, but sandwiched inbetween drywall is not the best application. At that point, it's not a 'limp barrier' and it's mass at 1lb/SF is not as significant as another layer of drywall at approx 2.5lbs/ SF..

my 10 cents.

With regards to adding a second layer of subfloor in residential construction, is Green Glue the best choice, or would it be better to have a layer of compressed insulation between the two?
