ART PRO VLA
« on: May 07, 2004, 10:37:01 AM »

I've been thinking of getting one of these for some time.  I've seen glowing comments about them made by prominent people in the biz.  Does anyone have direct experience shooting out vs. things like RNC, Joe Meek VC1Q or 6Q, Presonus Blue Max (all items I have and find useful)?  Also, what would you say are it's best primary applications?  THanks.

I have 2 that I like quite alot...
I think they can be pretty cool on drums mix & bass.
I know this may be blasphemy-but I also love it at the 2-buss...

Please tell me what other compressors/limiters you are using and like.  Thanks,

2 UA 1176's
2 DBX 160a's
4 FMR RNC's
1 Ashly SC-50
2 Ashly CL-50e's
1 Ashly CL-50
2 Symetrix 150's
1 Symetrix 501
2 Art ProVLA's
as well as all the plugs...

I like them all. My only mistake was years ago buying the dreaded Alesis 3630. I made it work-but when I outgrew it...I definitely knew it was time to move on...

Like it a lot, well built and a lot of bang for the bucks. No nonsense functions, 19" balanced in/out. It's nice to not have to pay loads just for "fame" and not function. Semipriced gear like Art, Aphex, Drawmer, Tla is according to me not bad choices.

VLA is great on bass.  Snare can be cool and vox sometimes.  I got mine when they first came out.  I bought it for the studio I used to work at.  When it closed that was one of the pieces I had to have...

Great, because I've been using both sides of an RNC to process bass at mixdown and I'm looking to free up that device for other uses.

Rolling Eyes Guys:  I'm a fan of the ART stuff too.  Question - Is the new ART TCS (Blue box) compressor as good as the PRO VLA, or is it a lightweight?  Anyone tried it or uses it currently?

You know I have been using a dbx 163x and barely I mea barely hitting it, followed by an RNC barely hitting it. The combination is punchy and lets highs through nicely with thick lows.

Seriously, its crazy.

I tried j.halls' suggestion on 2 buss barely hitting the meters, and I must say I am impressed. I also like it on bass.
