Recognition
« on: December 06, 2007, 06:43:35 PM »

Greetings.

I wonder if any of you folks would like to share bands/albums

of artists that you feel never got the recognition

(for better or worse) that they deserved.

It can be due to vocals/lyrics, music, production, whatever.

Preferably with media... to purchase, so I can check it out.

Sometimes the gems that one finds that seem to be largely

unknown, or unappreciated, can be more gratifying than the

largely accepted "greats".

For example, here are two bands that I found by accident years

ago, that I've never heard of, yet still excite me every time

I hear them.

Failure - Fantastic Planet
Rustic Overtones - Viva Nueva

If you care to...share.

What are the chances that you and I would immediately think of the same band/record.   Weird.  The Reivers - Pop Beloved

On a more recent note...  The High Llamas  Start with Hawaii or Gideon Gaye.  Think Pet Sounds, but um, even better?  Just amazing records... mostly the work of one insanely brilliant mind (Sean O'Hagan.)

And here's one that's well known in the indie rock crowd, but not well known enough, considering that it might be the best record of the last 10 years: Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over The Sea

And some haunting indie rawk fury... Archers of Loaf - VEE VEE.

Excellent jimmyjazz and garret.

Have not heard of any of those except Archers of Loaf.

Will track those down.

Thanks much.

For a completely different musical experience, check out Cory Cullinan's CD "My Oyster" at CD Baby.  Cory and I recorded this over a couple of years on DA-88s as an alternative to his going to grad school.  It may be the most eclectic album ever; I guarantee you've never heard anything quite like it.

Subtitles by Cecil.  Changed their name to Voy I think.

No idea where they are now.

Great minds, right?

Yeah, good band.  Another in that same vein is Superchunk.  Not ground-breaking, but very honest, energetic indie rock.  Hell, throw Afghan Whigs into the mix, too.

Jim Boggia, "Fidelity Is The Enemy". A pop masterpiece.

Shameless plug alert!

Song of America is wonderful. A 3 CD History of America in song. Disk one starts with an Indian chant and goes to the Civil War. Disk Two is Civil War to WW2. Three is WW2 to present. The songs are done by a VERY wide and eclectic range of artists who treat them with degrees of reverence ranging from full to none.

Full disclosure- It was produced by a friend of mine and I have a track on it. Rolling Eyes
But it  really is great.

Fair enough... interesting though that Mr. Wilson very much liked Hawaii, and at one time Sean O'Hagan was in negotiations to produce a new Beach Boys record.  (This was back a bit, pre-Smile.)
