Window Sound Proofing
« on: November 13, 2007, 10:47:46 AM »

I just moved into a new studio that has a window on the right hand wall.  This is nice to have but I'm hearing quite a bit of traffic noise.  What are the recommended ways to help sound proof a window?

Thanks!

depending on how well the walls are isolated, and how the window is constructed, you may want to consider replacing it with a better window, or you might be able to add another window inside (or outside) to achieve better isolation. you might consider a "window plug" to seal the window whenever you need some quiet and remove it when you need some light... if the wall isolation isn't very good, then just updating the window probably won't help much.

Look at the wall construction as Guilfo suggests... replace the window OR seal it up better around the perimeter... we find a lot of residential windows are just not sealed tightly (for sound) around the perimeter.

Thanks for the replies!  I'll definitely check into wall construction first...the owner might have some info on this.

As far as sealing the perimeter, is there any specific material that is better for sound?

I thought about a window plug because I'm renting the space...replacing or adding a second window would require the owner's involvement.  Are there any good plans on the internet or in a book that you know of?

Thanks again!

maybe the owner can add a second exterior grade window to make the place more energy friendly and get a rebate for being green Smile otherwise, just some good caulk to seal up any gaps.

If you never need to open the window, one choice would be a fire rated glass block window constructed from a Pittsburg Corning product called Thickset 90. It has an STC of 50.
