Soundelux U99/Neumann M269c
« on: May 04, 2004, 04:40:58 PM »

Alot of people say that the U99 is in the same neighborhood as the U67 soundwise (though with an extended high end on the U99). I've used an U99 on a few occasions and I've used an U67 on a couple sessions (though never side by side and the sessions w/the U67 were quite a while ago). I've never had the opportunity to use an M269c, which some people say is like a U67 with an extended top end (which sounds like the same description as the U99). Has anyone A/B'd a U99 with an M269c? Is a U99 closer to an M269c than it is an U67? Thx.

I use a U95(earlier U99) quite a bit and i've found the M269c to be a bit smoother on female vocals with less of that U95 grind. The U99 is updated a bit and may lose a bit of the grind the U95 has which ultimately would put it closer. The M269c IMO has a magic that rears it's head quite a bit more often than the U95 (especially on females. OTOH the U95 can add just the right amount of grind on a rock male vocal without getting squawky.

Actually, I just finished a session with an artist who I normally use a U-99 on, but with a 269 from a studio we worked in for the afternoon.  I was surprised at how nearly identical the character of the vocals were.  A little more top presence from the u-99, but otherwise all other components had the same balances I expect from the the u-99.

I wouldn't even begin to put the u-95 in the equation.  It is a completely different mic.  Great, but completely different.

I own an unmodified 269c and a pair of U99s. They are "of a family" but still very distinct. I find the U99 to have quite a bit more extended top end and not as much roundness or fullness in the lower mids/upper lows. As for female vocals, it is case by case but I almost always prefer one over the other (ie, it is seldom that both sound "equally good" on the same singer and song). If I had to pick just one to keep, other factors would more influence my decision (what other mics do I have, what is my main purpose for using the one I'd be keeping)- it simply isn't an issue of one being superior to the other.
