Separating tracks on an old reel-to-reel
« on: May 04, 2004, 02:10:44 PM »

Hi,

Got hold of an old Bang&Olufsen Beocord 2400 Reel-to-Reel, no manual, I don't think it is a multitrack but it is capable of 'Sound on Sound' recording. There's a pic of it here:

http://www.beocentral.com/productinfo.php?familyid=BC2400OR

Someone has given me an old 1/4inch tape to remaster, which has been recorded on both sides. However the first side, with some piano on it appears to have been
overdubbed with some speech recording and they're both playing at the same time. Is it possible to separate these tracks somehow or are they indelibly melded together, is there something I've missed? Do I need a different player?

Any help much appreciatated

thanks

Hi,

You need a player that has the same play head configuration as the record head on the original recorder.

Just a guess, but I'd suspect that there are 4 mono tracks on that tape.

Tape is not recorded on both sides, rather in both directions.  This is achieved by flipping it over left to right, nto to the back side.

A 2 track tape head might look like this:

Track 1
space 1
Track 2
space 2

So any tape running on that head format would be readable (with a playback head) or recordable (on a record head) on the "Track" portions and not on the 'space' portions.  Flip the tape and what was on the 'space 2' part is now over the 'Track 1' part, etc, etc.

It was not uncommon for people to maximize their tape stock by recording in mono, with one program on Track 1, a different program on Track 2, etc.
