Diamond Shaped CR...
« on: November 15, 2007, 04:06:09 PM »

What is the real sonic advantages of a diamond shaped CR?
Even the techs at my local studio gear stuff dont agree on the paralelism importance of studio rooms and CR.

In a perfect world, what should be a great studio?

chances are good, a diamond shaped control room is using "treatment walls" to shape the bounded space (which ideally is a rectangular room with good isolation and mode distribution). the angled walls help create space for bass trapping, absorption, diffusion, and overall a reflection free zone in the main listening position.

the design concept would generally be the same. make the hard boundaries around a space with good modal distribution or other quality or desirable attributes, and then add additional treatments to get the space to the desired set of characteristics. for example, a drum booth might be "live", a vocal booth might be "dry", a live room could be both depending on location in the room or by changing some configuration in it.

generally speaking you would want the room to be "neutral" (so you don't have a build up of undesirable room artifacts in the recording) yet have enough character to make it something distinctive or desirable to have in your recording (if thats what you want).
