Chinese shoppers stampeded to death...
« on: November 10, 2007, 09:33:48 PM »

... and the Who weren't even playing.

Quote:

BEIJING, China (AP) -- Shoppers eager to buy goods on sale stampeded at a Carrefour supermarket in southwestern China on Saturday, trampling three people to death and injuring at least 31, state media reported.

Shoppers slipped as they rushed through a door at the Carrefour in Chongqing city at 8:30 a.m. to snap up sale items, and those that fell were then crushed by other shoppers, the Web sites of the Xinhua News Agency and People's Daily reported.

The People's Daily said the shoppers had lined up outside the store since 4 a.m. to buy discounted rapeseed oil used for cooking.

In addition to the three dead, Xinhua said that seven among the 31 injured were seriously hurt. Police in Chongqing said they had heard about the accident but declined to independently confirm the media accounts.

Telephone calls to French-based Carrefour SA's China headquarters in Shanghai rang unanswered.

"The negative aspects of this business, not only will continue to prevail, but will continue to accelerate in madness. Conditions aren't going to get better, because the economics of rock and roll are getting closer and closer to the economics of Big Business America." - Bill Graham

Carrefour is actually a French supermarket chain.

Delete 'Supermarket', insert 'Hypermarket'.

Carrefour, Mammouth, Rallye... I remember them all from regular trips to France in the 1970's... They were simply GIGANTIC by comparison with even the largest British Supermarkets.

-Of course Wal-Mart's expansion and global encroachment has more recently recalibrated everyone's sense of scale, but in this case, I think it's probably safe to say that the French probably did it on that scale sooner than most others...
