96K or 88.2K to 44.1 24 bits ????????
« on: October 19, 2007, 09:25:53 AM »

Hi friends, whats the better for signal quality and ready to mastering, downsampling from 96Khz to 44.1Khz 24 bits no dither or 88.2Khz to 44.1Khz 24 bits no dither ?

Are you asking what's best to send to mastering? If so, leave it at  24 bits and 2xFS and let the mastering engineer handle it.

If you're asking which is better in the mastering room, it depends on a lot of variables...

Hi, sorry I´m asking about which is better downsampling from 96K or 88.2K in the mastering room  before dithering to 16 bits 44.1khz.
Best.......Pedri

If you're not sure, it's probably safest to go from 88.2kHz to 44.1, but most modern state of the art SRC algorithms will measure very similarly whether decimating from 96k or 88.2k.

Let your ears be your guide...

Ok....lets go to check and ear comparison...... other question: in my studio I have a old Apogee AD/DA 1000.
1-When I inputing a 44.1 Khz at 24 bits on Apogee AD1000 digital input (whit no option UV22) this signal is truncating or reduced to 20bits or it working internally ok on 24 bits for Apogee digital to analog conversion?
2-OK 24 bits...If it reduced to 20bits this 4 extra bits are internally truncating or redithering?

Many thanks.........best regards.....Pedri

If you're making a mix for the mastering engineer, I say keep the mixdown file at the same sample rate you have been working on and let the mastering engineer worry about the conversion.

The AD-1000 digital input truncates to 20 bits.

Hi,
Where has been Nika Aldrich?
He wrote an interesting paper concerning 96k x 88.2k and later, a book about Digital Audio.

I remember he mentioned there was no compromise if we downsampled from 96 or 88.2k.
He used to be a moderator at PSW and a frequent poster at the DUC.
