Studer vs AMPEX 1 inch 8 tracks
« on: October 17, 2007, 01:20:17 PM »

Hey there. Has anybody had experience with either the Studer A80 mkI or the AMPEX AG440-8 1 inch eight tracks?

Opinions of sound quality as well as info on relative maintenance/parts costs/availability would be hugely appreciated. I'm currently looking at both machines. Both are currently operating fine.

Many thanks.

The Ampex sounds world's better.
The Studer handles tape world's better.

I don't know in terms of reliability or parts these days.

to my way of thinking, they both have a third as many tracks as one reasonably needs to have.

and with A800 24 tracks being almost dirt cheap these days...

I'm in Australia so the situation's a little different as far as availability of quality 24 tracks.

I want to use it as a front end to a DAW so eight tracks is a good number.

In what way is the Ampex sonically superior? I'll be doing very few, if any drop ins etc so it doesn't matter how it handles tape so much.

Is there any example (to hear) of either machine any body knows of?

Thanks!
