high frequency limiter decision
« on: April 30, 2004, 11:27:16 PM »

Hey guys,

we are thinking a Weiss DS-1 would be a nice addition to our arsenal to help with problem projects(i.e. excessive sibilance, cymbals, or gritty gtrs).  Do you guys think this a wise investment? And if so at what point in the mastering chain is it most effective.  Thanks for your responses in advance.

Rumor has it that maestro Weiss is working on a new unit called the Powerhouse that will perform multiple functions (compressor, limiter EQ etc.). Could be worth the wait.

Though I have not had the pleasure, word has it that the Maselec M/S HF limiter is the killer de-esser right now...

I auditioned the Maselec and it's good for analog, but not as invisible as a good digital d'esser.

Thanks for the info

Are you guys talking about the Maselec made by Prism? I've never seen a m/s HF Limiter on the site.

Thanks,
Brian

Leif Mases designed the Maselec line for Prism, but there is more to it - Maselec...

Maselec's MPL-2 and MDS-2 can both act as high frequency limiters, but the MDS-2 offers M/S in the sidechain for better detection of center sibilance and less sensitivity to high end in the side. The M/S isn't actually in the audio signal path.

I can't imagine anything better than the DS1.  In split band mode it is very easy to isolate just the range you want to tweak.  If it's just a whistle or everything from 6k up.  I believe the filters that split the signal are linear phase, very sweet with low crossover distortion.  You can also apply + or - gain to the selected range.  I'm sure the Maselec is nice, but I'm sure it can't be as subtle or as agressive as the DS1.  I was actually looking at the Maselc until I stumbled on a used DS1!  I was using the dbx Quantum for these chores but haven't touched it since I got the Weiss.
