Besides the ITI / Sontec booth (on which I've posted in a seperate thread) one of the things that really caught my eye today:

The Burl Audio "B2 Bomber" ADC -
http://www.burlaudio.com/products/b2-bomber.php

http://www.burlaudio.com/graphics/B2-Bomber-rear.jpg
http://www.burlaudio.com/graphics/B2-Bomber-open1.jpg

This is created by the same guy who was behind most of the design of the UA2192 - had a very good chat with him and really appreciated his take on things and his philosophies.  What makes it very unique is there's a pair of custom made transformers in the analog path.  Everything else definitely looks to also be of very high quality, with very well thought out features - apparently it's built so that you can clip it's inputs with minimal damage possible.  Street price around $3500

Maybe not the only ADC you'd want in the rack but looks worthy of a demo as an alternative for those considering something like the HEDD or the Lavry AD10.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Well, didn't see anything that really excited me, this year (but then, most of you know I'm not one to get too excited about gear), though I did get some good social time with so folks I rarely see or had never met face to face before.

I think I'm going to try one of Bruno's Hypex amps. And when Grimm is able to get the DD1 finished, it will def be here on trial. Bruno is a very smart dude...

And Chris Athens should be doing stand-up.

The Legendary Audio Masterpiece blew me away. I know it's been around for a while but I guess this was a new version with a price of about $12-14K.

The thing I really like about it is the band splitting (and I hate.... read 'fucking hate' multi band) The implementation of this was just stellar and totally usable.

I could see myself getting one.

From the website:

One of the important features of the MASTERPIECE is the 3 band INPUT FILTER system that is used everywhere except, of course, on the Equalizer sections themselves.

A choice of High Pass, Band Pass and Low pass filters is available for insertion into the path of MASTERPIECE Processing blocks: TAPE TEXTURE, AUX SEND, VARI-PHASE, CLASSIC, and COMPRESSOR.

When all three INPUT FILTER Push-Buttons are pressed, the mixed outputs of the filters are combined and mixed to the signal return path.

The filter slope is 12 dB/Octave and the crossover frequencies are defined at - 3dB.

High Pass and Low Pass Filters produce opposite phase polarities. In order to obtain a flat frequency response over the whole audio band when they are mixed, it is necessary to invert the phase of the mid or Band Pass section. (Similar to the problem in loudspeaker crossover networks). So a Phase Invert Push-Button is provided for the Band Pass filter.

The effect of doing this can be heard on some program material - depends on whether the signal content tends towards a sine wave, as with a soprano voice or whether there is large harmonic content that spreads into adjacent frequently bands.

This phase reversal over a limited range of frequencies can produce some interesting spatial effects particularly when the IMAGING features are used.

A choice of two crossover frequencies is provided. The complementary LP and HP crossover filter frequencies are both shifted to produce an overall flat response regardless of the crossover frequency chosen.

That's nothing compared to how women behave around him.
Really quite shocking....

I could tell you some stories but I'd rather not become part of his standup routine

As a quick update, I had the pleasure of sitting on a mastering panel Sunday moderated by Bob Ludwig that included Greg Calbi, Tim Young, Gavin Lurssen and Paul Stubblebine - it was humbling to be among so many accomplished veterans. I enjoyed the experience and got to meet several people afterwards I hadn't previously had the chance to. All in all a very positive experience. Kudos to Bob and the rest of the panel!

Here's some pics that might be of interest -
The Museum of Sound had a booth - they have about 3 warehouses full of gear of historical interest and are trying to get a grant to open a museum of it to the public -
cool Ampex 1-track (reminds me of the Dr. Bronner "All One! All One! - We Must be All One or All None!!"):
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/ampex.jpg

& the latest in portable audio - the Nagra! -
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/nagra.jpg

Biggest & coolest surprise was seeing Burgess Macneal - one of the inventors of the parameric equalizer - and that he has restarted repairing and making the legendary Sontec & ITI eq's:
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/burgess.jpg
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/sontec.jpg

First time in the USA was Jocavi from Lisbon, Portugal showing their huge variety of their beautifully made diffusors and absorbers:
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/jocavi.jpg
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/jocavi2.jpg

I really dug getting to talk to Rich Williams (the designer of the UA2192) and checking out his new ADC, the Burl B2 Bomber - with transformers in the analog path!:

part 2:

In beta right now is the PSP Audioware Xenon brickwall peak limiter - according to Arf Mastering's Alan Silverman who I saw on the floor (and is beta testing it) this is amazingly transparent - in conversation he rated it better for most tracks than the TC MD4, Voxengo Elephant or Sony Limiter.  It should be released in a couple of months:
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/psp.jpg

Lavry was showing their new 2 channel ADC - the "Lavry Black" AD10 - to go along with the DA10 -
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/lavry.jpg

From what I could hear of it on via headphones the Vintage Design CL1MK2 is a very cool comp/limiter based on the Neve 2254 but with lots of nice control and features (detented everything except for make up gain controls) - might be my next purchase -
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/cl1mk2.jpg

The other comp that really has my interest in the DW Fearn VT7 -
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/dwfearn.jpg

Elysia showed their new mix compressor the Mpressor - along with the massively cool Alpha ($10g's but based on the demo seems like it is worth it) -
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/elysia.jpg

A much less expensive "Alpha" is Frontier Designs single fader DAW control box - looks like just what I need in a compact footprint -
http://www.totalsonic.net/aes/fd_alpha.jpg

Shadow Hills had a bunch of their retro look stuff there also - the new Dual Optograph which features a redesigned and enhanced optical section from their mastering compressor seemed especially cool -

So sorry to have missed it - I had a really late night on Saturday and was having a late brunch instead.  Anything of interest said during it or was it a rehash of the usual?

I really liked the idea of the the Burl B2 Bomber (2ch AD converter - see above for pictures) There is no other 2 ch AD in that price range (there are cheaper or more expensive). I liked the fact that you can change how it hits the transformers. I can see it being a cool thing to have as an alternate AD. A converter with vibe. Great for mixing engineers too. Really cool and nice guy behind the design of it BTW... he seemed at little lonely in his booth at times though. lol.

Meeting Burges was a trip. That dude can talk and had Michael Fossenkemper and I making eye jesters at each other. Great stories. I can't wait to order a set of brand new shiny HS-1000s from him.

On a funny note, Phil George and I walked into an elevator in the hotel and found we were sharing it with the isotope people (ozone) and I called them my enemy and ripped into them about how the software was all wrong and conflicted with my mastering ethics... I'm not sure if they got my Canadian sarcasm and I'm pretty sure I made Phil and George uncomfortable... but I had fun with it.   I can't tell you how many times I've heard from clients "Well I really liked what you did but I was wondering if you could get it to sound a little more stereoized like I did at home with this software that has multiband harmonic masturbater exciter..." Anyway, I think I made up for it by telling them that I thought their GUI was kickass. Wink

Completely agreed - definitely piqued my interest as possibly an alternative that would work well as an option my Mytek Stereo96 for when some transformer vibe is in preference to a more "transparent" capture.  I'm surprised there wasn't more attention being sent his way as Rich seemed extraodinarily knowledgeable and friendly and his product was one of the few things there that seemed actually "new" to me.

His description of how George Massenburg was dressed on his wedding day was particularly funny to me.   Burgess was extremely gracious to me though and it was indeed an honor to meet him.

Yes, it's as good as the hype.
I just got back into Seattle tonight. I met a few of you for the first time. The Mastering panel was great!

Paul Stubblebine anounced a new project (www.tapeproject.com), that will supply master quality 1/4" half-track tape to any individual that wants to pay for it.
As the V.P of the Pacific Northwest Audio Society, we'll be having a meeting on Thursday evening with one of the partners in the project. Should be interesting.

Great to see NY for the first time.....  THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME!!!

I hung out at Orange Hill Audio for quite a while and chatted with the Magix guy. Very cool dude, and the demo he gave to me of Samp/Seq 10 had me jonesing to upgrade.
Also got to run the Chandler Curve Bender and the new Germanium Compressor through it's(their?) paces. That Germanium is a mofo of a comp. Uber cool with lots of tone/comp variations, all of which sounded great. The CB was very impressive as well, but it's a bit harder to tell on the floor about something as subtle as a mastering quality eq..
I finally got to play with the Elysia Alpha comp. Extremely impressive box. It's was clean but not boring.
Lastly J.J. Blair had a super cool custom Pete Townshend model iPhone. Mega bitchin.
