Okay, I did not watch the MTV VMA's last night, but I did see some excerpts of Britney Spears' performance. It's hard to miss since it's all over the media.
I don't care that Britney Spears is not as thin as she once was, or that she can't dance like she once did. What I find disconcerting is she is being criticized, among other things, for lip-synching out of synch. There is no shock or indignity that she was lip synching. No, her crime is that she didn't lip synch well enough to fool anyone.
Has it really come to this? Do so few people care anymore whether "performers" can actually sing or play that this is a non-issue now? Is faking a live performance so prevalent now that the only crime is to get caught? Is visual imagery and choreographed dancing all anyone cares about anymore? No wonder music sales are down. No wonder music "fans" don't value music the way they once did.
Sorry, to be so cynical for the moment. It will pass...
