question....
« on: April 28, 2004, 10:44:52 AM »

what piece of gear in your rack could you not live with out?

and why. (basically, what does it do for you that others can not?)

for me, it's my modded ashly SC-50's

they are agressive on drums in a great way, but if you finess them they can be very smooth on bass.

i've just gotten to know em so well i can't deal with out em.

I thought this would be so easy to answer.

Then I tried to.

It's a weird answer, but it'll work for now I suppose.  I mix ITB (would prefer not to, but can't afford all the gear I want quite yet), and my drum recordings would sound even worse than they already do without the Multi-band compressor that came with  Samplitude (my DAW of choise).  Occasionally cool on bass too - oddly enough, I've used it on just about everything except for my 2-buss.

Go figure.

Sorry j. - completely forgot that I was in the "Hardware Review" forum - saw that you posted and figured it was in yours.  Oopsie.  Feel free to wipe my reply out if you so desire.

Besides the electrical power, patchbays, decent mic-pres and cabling I'd prolly say my Distressors. They get used on everything for moderate tone shaping to squashing the fuck out of stuff. I want ten more.

stuff you can't live without......

I know I'll never sell my API 512 pre's.

I have an Ashley SC-50 and recently had it modded like J Hall's.  The mod is definitely worth it IMO.  The SC-50 has become a staple on bass guitar.  (By the way, you said you use it on drums J.  Which drums?)

I doubt I'll ever sell my Lexicon ALEX either.  I only use it for a couple sounds but I use them all the time.

Who does the mod, or there a schematic I can get to do the mod myself floating around? How much of a difference did you notice?

J,
Thanks.  I knew you had 2 and had the stereo link switched so I figured O/H was one of the uses.  I've only got one but I think I'll throw up a R-121 (as mono O/H) tonight at band practice and check it out on mono O/H.

Here is the recpit thread with the schematic of the SC-50 and the design of the filter.  (I believe it's the schematic for a blueface SC-50 and not a blackface by the way)

http://recpit.prosoundweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=10872

If I was a techy (I'm not) I would have tried doing the mod myself.  It doesn't look too complex if you're into that kind of stuff.

(Also, I believe the exact same result could be achieved by inserting an EQ in the sidechain in case want to get an idea to what it would sound like before performing surgery.)

I couldn't live with:

AMEK 9098 pres
Safe Sound Audio P1 (For the pre AND compressor)
API 512c pres
Eventide H3000
Sequis Motherload

The rest is hit or miss, mostly hit.

I've gotten very used to this digital mastering setup and for quick demos of sessions. Buss out to ZQ-2 into a Weiss DS1-MK2. Lotta bread for the Weiss but it's so transparent and never leaves me wishing I had something better.

Except for two songs J Hall mixed, I don't think anything with more than one player that's come out of my room has not had an RNC on it somewhere.  Great River MP2H gets used a lot too.  I think my most useful piece of gear is my little Rat Shack 3" cubes.
