Printing to hard disk (Mixing outside of the box through a 16:2 passive mixer).

Don't have the real state for a 2"  and a 1/2" at the moment.

Honestly I try and stay away from noise reduction for more than one reason.
Firstly, If I want such a "clean" sound , I would probably print to some kind of digital format. I find at 15IPS 1/4" has a really cool fat grainy sound.
1/2 inch 30 IPS is just a great standard for mw for everything ..also it really believe in a well maintained well aligned Ampex deck over just about anything.
Mike Spitz at (name of Company) does a cool modern electronics upgrade.
1" 15 or 30 is very fat but actually has more crosstalk than 1/2" 30 IPS
all in all tape is the way for me to get my recordings on to tape since they have never seen it since basically everything I do these days is straight into Pro tools.
As far as noise reduction, I have never really found that I like the sound of it...for me ....AND I have been bitten in the butt by it when I was forced to use due to the request of the producer. A really good SR alignment can be tricky and making sure that the units are setup correctly dictates whether your mixes are going to get in AND OUT correctly at mastering
It is just to big a variable for me. I do not like to test fate since I was bitten big time by it a long time ago and had to master from a shitty DAT safety master ...

well, i've currently got a scully 280b 1/4" deck that still needs some TLC.  but i just bought a whole lot of ampex 440 stuff and a 1/2" 2 track is in there.

i think i'll ditch the scully (space is an issue) and go with the 1/2"

anyway, i've heard all sorts of stuff about the 1" mix decks from, "they rule, nothing else will touch it", to, "good luck setting the azimuth on that thing"

do you print to 1" often?

what mastering houses have it?

aren't you limited in what you can do with a relatively "non standard" format?

i'm still enjoying most all my projects on 2" 24 track.  so the masterlink is a nice step for it's ease of use, and creating CD's for reference

i'm always a bit nervous about running a mix at 15 ips from 2" 24 track since i've already got noise, do i want more?

thanks for your thoughts.....

MCI JH110 1/4" 30ips. I printed mixes at 15ips for a long time cause I liked to hear more colouration but now 15ips really bugs me. Too soft and fuzzy for the stuff I've been doing lately.
