Soundproof Door?
« on: August 09, 2007, 08:58:09 AM »

Can anyone recommend a contractor who can supply and install a soundproof door for a facility  in the NYC area?  I've done a forum search without luck.  Thanks in advance...

Contact Steve Dutton at Quietstar. They are the area REP for IAC and can do the installation as well. It's not cheap but you used the magic word; "Sound Proof"... LOL

Thanks, Fran.  Yes, the word "soundproof" and the cost goes through the roof.  I got a quote for an Overly door installed at $3800 !!!.  I'll call your guy, but it sounds like we'll have to do an in-house made double-door solution.  Thanks for the referral.

If you go the DIY route, you might want to check out your local construction salvage shops for used doors.  I live in a small town, and the local architectural/construction salvage yard here has thousands of doors in all sizes for <$100 each.  Some of them are beasts, big solid hardwood doors from schools and factories... they don't make them like that anymore.    To buy stuff like this new would be big money for the materials.

Here's one possibility in nyc:

Solid core doors which you can use to make a tight (often magnetic) seal are what you want.  Of course, heavy doors are not only hard to hang but if not hung well (no jokes please)tend to sag over time as they pull on the frame.

IMHO, door sound performance is more about the perimeter seal and the detailing at the frame/wall interface than it is about the actual door leaf.. Assuming you get a good solid core door leaf, then the performance comprimise is almost always at the door seal and the frame.. just from experience...

thanks guys.  I ordered a few solid core doors.  Now, once they come in, what would you recommend me do to fill in any air gaps? closed cell tape?  any other/better suggestions? the frame is pre-hung as it is in an apartment complex (I will be using 3" screws to help secure the new heavier door).  But as far as the door-to-frame space, what's good for that?  Thanks!

This may seem obvious, but sometimes it isn't:

just ensure that your frames are as solid as you walls and doors.

I'm not sure what sort of door frame you have in place since it is a complex. But just check to be sure.

Also not sure how many hinges you have, but if you have 3, look at getting 4 going.

I'm about to embark on this myself. So, a sympathetic "good luck!"

I didn't think about getting an extra hinge.  that's a good thought.  I have 3.  The frame is pretty week (its like most budget apartment complexes.  So that's why I was hoping to get past the frame and into the main support 2x4.  I tried the 3" screws but they didn't go deep enough.  So, I just went to some 5" screws and they seem to be working.  we'll see...

Anymore suggestions on filling in the air gaps?
