Protools 6.4
« on: April 23, 2004, 04:46:18 PM »

Hey-
anybody upgraded to 6.4 yet? I'm still running 6.3.2 and everything is working just fine - but i've noticed on the DUC that several people have made the switch to 6.4. Frankly, i always wait awhile for others to troubleshoot DIGI's mistakes before i create headaches for myself. Just curious if anyone has made the upgrade and what they think.

glad to see a PT thread started.  i have some questions as i've been TOTALLY analog for about 2.5 years now, prior to that i was a PT jedi!

can you run 6.3.2 with mix plus hardware, or is version 6 and it's revisions, HD only?

i always held my rig back when updates came around.  doing high paced ad sessions day in and out, a crash was something that just couldn't happen.  the upgrade the 5.1 was really stressful.

Mix hardware can be used with Pro Tools up to 6.4  Mix hardware will not be supported with later versions of Pro Tools and is not compatible with the Apple G5 computers.

This is actually the 'reviews' section, hopefully a mod will move this thread to a proper forum.

For the current information, check http://www.digidesign.com/compato/

Pro Tools MIX+ is officially supported on non-G5, OS 10.2 (not Panther) using PT 6.1.  Additional support has been announced but full, official qualification is pending.

Pro Tools HD uses 6.2 on Jaguar or 6.2.3/6.4 on Panther.  6.2.3 is a free update; there is a fee for 6.4.

i don't see why we can't discuss recording software in a forum dedicated to the discusion of recording software.

Therein lies the joke.

I think the title of this group on the homepage could be a bit more clear.  It looks like it's meant for people to post reviews as opposed to general audio discussion.

i'll have that header changed, or myself removed as moderator, i'm totally uninterested in babysitting a forum dedicated to merely reviews.  thank you, have a nice day.

Perhaps the word Review could be substituted with Discussion.

Using PTLE 6.4 on a DIgi001 (pres and converters bypassed with outboard gear), Mac OS 10.3.3, Mac G4 Sawtooth with Sonnet 1Ghz processor upgrade.

Works just fine.  No issues.

Noobie question.  Can somebody explain the plug latency thing?  Do the digi plugs have latency or is it just the waves plugs?

So far 6.4 has treated me well. Razz

ALL tdm based plug-ins have latency

it's just a matter of how much

last i checked this feature still works in current PT versions.

bring up the mix window
on the channel you wish to know the latency of:

hold the apple key
and click the "vol." bar.  (best if done with mixer NOT in "mini" mode)

the "vol." bar will toggle through three different measurements.

1. volume
2. pk (peak level)
3. dly (delay)

delay represents the latency that exists on that specific channel from all the processing being used on it.

the number is shown in samples and can not be changed to any other unit but samples.

what i used to do when i came time to mix was to do a save as, and name the file whatever it was......MIX

then i'd start mixing and nudging the tracks around to offset the latency.

if something got screwed up really bad, i could always return to the "tracking" version, or just use track transfer to bring tracks over from the "tracking" session doc.

hope that helps.

Do you think the upgrade is worth it?
