Midas or Toft?
« on: June 28, 2007, 04:27:47 PM »

OK guys:  I really need an answer - am about to spend $2-3K on an analog board.  I currently have a Soundtracs 12-4, and it is just too small (and only 2 effect sends).  I'm thinking at least 16 channels w/4-6 aux sends...any recommendations on the two above...others...?

I've never used the Toft, but the Midas stuff is great.

funny picking those 2, as one is specifically designed for studio work while the other live work

but yeah the midas boards are at the top of "live" analog boards, so if you like to give your console some rough treatment get a midas as it will hold up to abuse  Very Happy

still waiting for some decent reviews on the "new" toft boards

Remember, though - the Midas Venice and Verone are NOT the same as the top of the line Midas touring consoles - they're smaller, cheaper versions. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Warts and all.

Read the whole thing, but be warned that they say "fuck" over at the Womb.

Enjoy.

Cheers,

Don't treat it that roughly, the Midas build quality is nothing like the Yamahas.

Not that they're weak, but reliability is not the strong point. The sound/flexibility is.

The Venice and Verona board use the pre-amp and EQ circuits from an XL-3. Very nice sounding boards. I don't know what the rest of the circuitry is like, but it isn't shit. I used one for a live recording of a TV show a while ago and it was well suited to the job. Direct outs on every channel.

There's also a mod so the aux sends are post EQ, for monitor engineers.

I use an XL-42 Pre/EQ (from the Xl-4/Heritage boards) in the studio all the time. Sounds great.
