Audient Black Series
« on: June 05, 2007, 02:42:45 AM »

Have you (or anyone else) ever touched these units? Just wondering why these modules seem to fly under the radar.

Thanks

While I haven't tried the "black series"... everything else I've tried that was made by Audient was crap... thin sounding, no balls, minimal personality worth giving attention.

That's probably a good reason.

We got the Black Series here - the full program of EQs, Comps, DAC, Pre. As soon as we have tested it I will post the results.

I like the ASP008 because of no balls and stuff.

the problem is, that the gain starts at 0. so that is like the most gain on the last quarter of the knobrotation.

there are seriously more charakter pres out there.

no exp. with the black series.

Hey Fletcher,

is this also true for their consoles? The 8024 series aren´t really cheap though, how would they compare to a Toft ATB in terms of sound and summing f.e.? I know the Toft is a lot cheaper but I heard some very good things about it and couldn´t quite believe it considering the price...

thanks!

cheers

In my experience they (the consoles) are a very neutral sounding product. The Toft is by heritage, supposed be funky.

Very popular (and a good choice) for educational establishments.
A good teaching console that will set students up for everything they encounter above. Price point a major factor there.

Much better build than the Toft, even though its too is a great product.

I understand that the earthing has a massive copper buss bar inside, so that could be an indication of solid design?

It depends on what's UNDER the hood. A peak will probably reveil 35 year old opamps, you know, the same one's that drove up the prices for discrete English consoles...

Imagine trying to use 30 year old computers. Apple II or Commador 64 anyone?

It's 2010. It's not 1975.

So you think there´s something wrong with the Tofts?

I am about to build a "producing/arranging" working space (not really mixing) around a console and wondering which way to go...

I'm not Fletcher, but I did overdubs and mixes on an Audient 8024 in Ontario for a few weeks (I believe those consoles are quite popular up there). I struggled with a lot of the tracks (simple 16-24 track rock four piece which I recorded, and was initially very happy with) for a lot of the time I was there...the 2mix seemed cloudy and without definition. You could kinda get a song to swing a little better with the buss compressor but overall it sounded quite grey. Fletcher is spot on with the "no balls" assessment.

The EQ's are pretty good, clean but quirky. Lots of routing and I/O. Build wasn't up to snuff for a desk that gets commercial use...this was/is a busy studio.

As soon as I got those tracks onto a Tonelux rig the whole thing opened up and sounded a lot more like it did when it was tracked, maybe a bit sweeter. Different room, but same monitors. The room in Canada did not seem to be the issue, in my opinion.

Grain of salt, as always...but I don't think I'd jump at the chance to sit at one of those consoles again.

I think the ASP-008 might be preferable to the other 8-channel preamps with ADAT option that can be had used for under $1000 used, but I wouldn't put it near the league of the Sytek 4 channel unit.

I don't know why ESP-Disk liked this session so much.

P.S.  BTW, I was SHIT DRUNK this entire recording session.  The deal I had with my artists in Portland was I got to be SHIT DRUNK if I wasn't getting paid anything.
