Whatcha Been Listenin' To?
« on: April 22, 2004, 11:39:28 AM »

Hey,

I've been going through an insatiable appetite for new (or atleast new to me) music recently, as well as some of my fav's i haven't listened to in awhile. This is what i've been diggin' on recently, how 'bout you?

Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted (luxe & redux version)- Classic.
Saturday Looks Good To Me - All Your Summer Songs (lo fi 60's era pop)
Sufjan Stevens - Michigan, The Great Lakes State (a beautiful record about my home state - great DIY recording too!)
The New Pornographers - Electric Version (great songs & performances)
Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand (new wave art punk for 2004)

anyways, i'm interested to see what y'all are listening to. Also, glad to see the new (and faster!) rec pit finally!

Well my usual musical taste falls into the Pavement, Archers of Loaf, Polvo, GBV, Cursive, Superchunk, Smiths, etc

But lately I have been checking out some different styles.  I have been enjoying the new Thrice, the new Yellowcard, and Taking Back Sunday.  The Thrice album has really grown on me.  I really think the songs work very well togther and it moves the album nicely.  Plus I like loud drums and its got loud drums.

and the re-mix record is awesome too (MGM endings)

pixies doolittle is getting some spins

bjork is getting a lot of my attention as she has a way of totally captivating me.

My tastes tend to run towards progressive rock (especially older bands) and heavy metal (yeah, I like both Yes and Slayer).  I can almost always enjoy a band that writes great melodies though, and lately I've discovered how absolutely amazing the Flaming Lips are.  Anything from '95-present is unreal.  Kind of ironic too, since Tarbox is about 10 minutes from me.

Dug up a few the other day
Modest Mouse-Moon and Antartica...wow that's a great sprawling record.

The new Vanderslice is good.

Yes-Close to the edge.

Niilson-Schmiilson.

J.,
I just ordered Pedro the lion off the net yesterday, somehow I've never really heard their stuff but the name keeps popping up so I clicked buy it now.

which pedro did you get, i think he just put out a new one....not sure though

control is really good in a lazy sorta way

what do you think of the new vanderslice record
it's sort of a departure from his earlier work in many ways
he's exploring new vocal meters and melodies that i never would have guessed him to do.

i think the writing is brilliant, once again.

i talk to john on and off (probably once every three months or so).  the thing that i always say to him (looking for a comment) is, "john, you tell your stories so well, i can never figure out if it's a story, or if it really happened to you"

to date, he has only said, "hahahahahaha, j.hall you rule"

i don't think he'll ever give me a straight answer.  although, i have gotten confirmation about a few tunes in particular that are true to his life.

anyway, i'm rambling.

suggested song to give you goosebumps:
peter gabriel, the flood

Control is the Pedro I got coming.

I have Vanderslice's last 2 records,both are very good.
Cellar door is growing on me,I like his approach and he has a off skew way of songwriting.

I've been buying a lot of stuff I've always liked but didn't own, or maybe had on tape etc. There's a couple exceptions:

Uncle Tupleo (March 16-20 1992)

The Band (Accross the great divide)

Richard and Linda Thompson (I want to see the bright lights tonight)

Chris Smithers (Train Home)

Television (Marquee Moon)

Bob Dylan (Blood on the Tracks)

The Velvet Underground (Velvet Underground)

some White Hassle mp3s

and these guys:

Hi,
it's been quite a while from the last time I posted here. Anyway, nice to see the new look and the renovation.
Lately I've been listening to the entire archive of KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic (www.kcrw.com/show/mb).
I found a tons of interesting things I didn't knew.
Revealing. On KEXP (www.kexp.org) there a lot too. Just sit down, open RealPlayer or MediaPlayer and enjoy.

For those who are looking for free (and legal) new music - i highly reccomend www.epitonic.com (all sorts of indie stuff) also, www.emusic.com (50 free downloads of all sorts of stuff) and www.pitchforkmedia.com has some also (granted these are sponsored by the labels, but there are always some good finds)

i've always seen that song listed as "The Flood", but yes we're talking about the same song.

gabriel easily has five songs i could play at my funeral.....problem is, i'll be dead and won't get to enjoy them.

I was like 15 when this came out. Liz Phair was my older woman crush. When I met my wife this was her favorite album. Lot's of nights making out on her couch to this one!

weezer: blue album

Every song on here is memorable every word belted out by everyone I know. You cannot wear a frown with this in the changer.

that dog: totally crushed out

I don't have anything by That Dog but I did see them at a little club here in KC with Beck. They blew me away. The biggest thing I remember is how awesome the bass sounded through the Boogie 400+ she was playing.

ditto for me only i was 16 when it came out. most of the music i like is from that time period. the stuff that affected me profoundly from ages 14-18.

again, 17 when this came out, still my favorite record of all time.

yea that dog were amazing, especially this album. i'm really surprised they didn't get bigger given they were so good at what was a semi-popular sound at the time. this is another one of those albums i can never get sick of. it gets better with every repeated listen.

that'd be amazing if the afghan whigs are getting back together...Greg Dulli's Twilight Singers are good, and the newest record Blackberry Belle is worth checking out, but it just can't hang with Black Love, Gentlemen, or 1965.

I've put a little rack next to the CD player in which I stick all the stuff that's "best right now" in my CD collection, some of the stuff is just CDs I've not had a proper chance to listen to or some of it is stuff that I've been working on. I'll exclude the latter ones from the list.

1. Charles Mingus: Mingus Ah Um
2. Rough Trade Counter Culture 2003
3. Elliot Smith: Figure 8
4. Neil Young: After the gold rush
5. Television: Marquee moon
6. Lapko: Stacy (A great Finnish indie band)
7. The Cure: Faith
8. Joni Mitchell: Hits (The only "best of" here...)
9. Miles Davis: ESP
10. The Cure: Wish
11. Little feat: Dixie Chicken
12. Beach Boys: Good vibrations
13. David Bowie: Scary monsters
14. Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
15. The Ark: We are the Ark
16. Morrissey: Vauxhall and I
17. Interpol: Turn on the bright lights

Also around the CD player:

Cul de sac: Crashes to light, Califone: Quicksand/Cradlesnakes, Curtis Mayfield: Superfly, Deus: The ideal crash, Gene: Drawn to the deep end, Sergio: See far and fall (another Finnish thing...), Viola: Tearcandy (...and another one), Devendra Banhart: Rejoicing in the hands, Sonic Youth: Dirty. etc. etc.

Looking forward hearing the new Morrissey, also some good local indie coming up here. Mummypowder and Mother Goose to name two.

It's one of the most hilarious albums out there. A must have for engineers and producers. Go to Amazon.com to find and read reviews.

That is some funny shit.

Fibes, have you heard the Country Rockers from Memphis? Kinda the same vein as Jon Wayne but with a old school rockabilly slant...plus Ringo the Drummer was like 80 something during their heyday(I think he's passed on to the great kit in the sky by now though).

The Sound - like Joy Division but cool cause ya missed it the first time round

Gene Clark - No Other - makes alt country redundant 25 years early

Sparks - Kimono my House - Like Queen and ABBA going to the Opera

Wire - 154 - You know how hip hop has classic breaks from old soul records? Well this is the indie kids version.

Sismundi - Zoesch demos - oh the pain.

Still listening to Broken Social Scene and various Smiths records.

Really digging Joanna Newsom's Drag City Debut - "The Milk Eyed Mender" She's a harpist with this strange little girl voice that writes great lyrics and wonderfully oblong melodies. Would love to record a harpist sometime, Noah Georgeson does a simple, tastful production job.

Loving Jim O'Rourke's guitar tones on the advance copy I procured of Wilco's new one, "A Ghost is Born." Jim's own "Eureka" will always hold a place in my heart as well.

Karen Dalton has become a staple for me lately as well...what a voice, it sounds like frozen cigarette smoke pushed slowly through a jello mold. Also a talent for phrasing that it is beyond perfection. Only Ella compares.

Andrew Bird's "Weather Systems." Former violinist for Squirrel Nut Zippers makes beautiful, mournful pop record with Mark Nevers. Very dynamic, no multiband compresser mastering here. Who knew a violin virtuoso could whistle like that?

Self - "Breakfast with Girls": One of the squeaky-cleanest, sugary-sweetest, most gloriously overproduced messes of undeniable pure-pop genius I could ever hope to hear. I return to this one from time to time and am always blown away by something new. Released on Dreamworks in 1999 and currently out of print but by no means rare. Used copies and cutouts can be had for under $10. Pick it up.

The new Destroyer record, "Your Blues" is weird and amazing. The entire record is pretty much various Kurzweils, handclaps and nylon strung acoustic guitar accompanying several instances of Dan Bejar's voice. The first line of the record is "O notorious lightning, yes I had to ride you, and trash the crystal jets they kept in storage inside you." Need I say more?

Echo & the Bunnymen - "Evergreen": so much better than Coldplay.

Hi,
lately I've switched my attention to more acustical music. More of a songwriter thing instead of the usual "rock" stuff.
