Eleanor Rigby mix
« on: April 22, 2007, 06:19:38 AM »

great song but I don't get the mix.

during verses the lead vox is panned to one side while the string quartet is on both. (on the first verse you can hear when the lead vox is suddenly panned from center to the side on "eleanor" after the intro.)

the chorus has the lead on both sides.

whenever "ah, look at all the lonely people" is sung the lead vox  is panned to one side with the other vocal parts opposite and strings on both sides.

just curious what ppl think.

if you subtract left from from right you get the lead vocal and the harmonies..

the lead vox was artificially doubled for the choruses. if you sum the mix to mono you can hear the vocals flanging heavily during the chorus.
what you hear at the beginning of the first verse is not a panning from center to right but the doubled voice being switched off.

The Beatles never considered the STEREO mixes as the main mixes, presumably because the technology was relatively new and given the 4 track format they were working on at the time, decisions had to be made to be putting all vocals on one side or other such tough choices.

To really properly hear the songs up through Sgt. Peppers, try to seek about the MONO versions.  Might be tough to do on CD...may have to go to vinyl for that.

The stereo versions do not count.  Ignore them.

Seek out the Parlophone original mono pressings.
