Anyone use an EL7 FATSO . ?

I bought one a couple of years ago and have yet to find really any good use for it . It doesn't seem to work for me .

i run guitars through it in basic tracking...
record pretty much every overdub through it thereafter...
sometimes use the compressors on drum room mics in mix...
use the warmth feature to soften up vocals/percussion...
often run the whole mix through it as well...

but other than that i never touch the thing.

i don't think of it as a "holy shit listen to THAT!" kind of box, it's a lot more "yeah...that's better" kind of thing. but i find it super useful for a lot of different stuff...

had mine for two years and only used it on drums. Often prefered the the unprocessed stuff. I sold it. Didn't really like it's compression and the thing was kinda noisy.

I love mine, but I remember being a bit underwhelmed at first.

I think MoreSpaceEcho has it right.  It's not an instant 'magic' box, but it's a very useful tool, particularly if you're recording rock straight onto hard disc.

The 'warmth' control is basically a high frequency limiter, which is great for avoiding the sort of transient pile-up you can get with a lot of tracks of distorted guitar, aggresive drums, etc.  Inline, I tend to use pretty subtle settings, but as a mult, extreme settings can be very effective.

I don't really think much about whether the Fatso sounds exactly "like tape" (which tape? which machine?), since that's not really my goal with it.  For adding controllable levels of euphonic distortion, it's great.

I went through probably a year or so of trying it, going, "I guess it's alright...but I'm missing some air."  To me it's not the most hifi box, it does lose a little detail & air.  But then I started playing around with it in parallel with other compressors and/or unprocessed signal, using pretty extreme settings, and totally fell in love with it.
