Belkin did a lesser version some time ago, so it's nothing new although Alesis probably does it better.
I think it's a nifty idea, since you don't need to pay for a harddrive. However, I think they are both overpriced.

i fear the thing that fails in this device is the "built-in limiter to avoid distorted recordings".

The only thing to do with the iPod is the interface to use it as a hard drive is seems.
A bit "limiting" to me.
