duly noted.

so when I purchased my cable labeled "TOSlink" for my "ADAT optical" or "Digital optical" or "Digital lightpipe" or "whatever you want to call it" device....I purchased the wrong cable?

and if so, why does it work so well?

Jesus.... Please tell me you went to audio school.....

RCA and SPDIF have the similar cable types. As a matter of fact you can use them almost interchangably. RIGHT??? But if you send SPDIF signal down an rca line and try to monitor it? Not great.

Dude, its not the cable or the connector its the way that the cable and connector are interfacing with the electronics.

SPDIF is a stereo format. Will ONLY work stereo.

ADAT lightpipe while using the same connector works only in 8 channel operation. So while yes you are right its the same cable you cannot (as far as I know) interface SPDIF optical gear with ADAT lightpipe gear using those connections.
