AKG C12 VR
« on: March 21, 2007, 07:04:24 PM »

Ok Guys...

Was over at the Sweetwater webpage nosing around mics...

AKG C12 VR for $5,329.00.  AKG C414s around $1k.

These mics are NOT new nor is the technology (decades old) so can someone explain to me why these mics remain so expensive?

Probably a typo.

That looks like the correct price.

Look for a good C12 or 'The Tube' though as they will be cheaper and maybe better.

Ask Terry Manning what he thinks of the C12VR.

OK.

The C12VR is definitely not worth that amount of money.  It is NOT an accurate recreation of an original C12.

The VR is an OK microphone, and I have actually finally found a decent place for it on snare, but do not expect a great mic!

In my opinion, the R

I own a "The Tube" and it in no way resembles a real C12.

I use it on snare, bass drum, FOK and occasionally somewhere else. It's honky, dark and doesn't have any of that great C12 top.

Hey...

-Whaddayaknow?

I've found a use for one on a snare also.

Of course MY use is as a substitute drumstick, but keep it to yourself: I can't give away ALL my secrets ! Wink

Nah, seriously: -it's not that bad, but it's most assuredly NOT a go-to mic, and it's NOT a C12. I'd probably rate its value at about $1500 in quality terms, and I'd never countenance paying 5 large for one.
