Lynx AES16e and Cranesong HEDD/ Mac Pro
« on: October 22, 2011, 01:54:16 PM »

Hi all,

I just picked up a new AES16e. I'm trying to use it with Logic, a Cranesong HEDD, and a Benchmark DAC1. My computer is a Mac Pro 2 X 2 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon. Operating system is 10.5.8 I am using the 1.0 Build 49 driver and the 11.1 firmware. SSD system disc.

I've done some searching around but couldn't find the answer to my issue.

Here is the long and short of my problem. I want to clock the card to the Cranesong. This set-up is to facilitate processing through an analog loop, and monitoring through the Benchmark. Set up:

Digital out 1 (AES16e)> Benchmark DAC1
Digital out 2 (AES16e)  > HEDD AES in
Digital in 1 (AES16e) > HEDD AES out
wordclock out HEDD > wordclock in (AES16e)

Let's say I'm set to 48 KHz on the HEDD, and the card is set to clock to "external." The "external" on the Lynx Mixer is reading 48 KHz, but the "measured rate" says 96 KHz, and the "channel status" rate says 88.2 Khz.This is with Logic not even launched. When launched, I can pass signal through everything this way properly, but it will periodically "pop" and reset the clock and unlock it for a few moments ("working...") No good.

If I change to 88.2 on the HEDD, everything reads fine. If I switch to 96KHz, it looks good, but the "channel status" still reads 88.2. If I switch to 44.1 KHz, the measured rate says 88.2 KHz. Again, this is with Logic closed.

I've reinstalled the drivers, reseated the card, multiple restarts, all that. I could update to 10.6 and then update the drivers/firmware, but I'm trying to not do that and render some plugins dead. I will do that as a last resort.

I also tried switching to syncing to "digital in 1," but had to restart. Now, it is not reading ANY sampling rate on the digital in 1 in the mixer.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Before you read the stuff below, is the RATE LOCK on?  On the Lynx Mixer, that can cause some headaches.

Hey Garrett! Thanks for the reply.

No, that's not on... I wish that were the problem. It's really funky... I swapped the PCI-e slot, and it SEEMED to work for awhile, but now the digital stream is completely gone again. Still recognizing word clock though. I'm leaning towards the card being defective.

My next move is to install 10.6 (grr/boo) and update the drivers/firmware just to see if it'll work.

BTW, saw some pix of the new space. Pretty sweet looking!

It should be working.
Be sure and unhook any other word clock cables if they are connected.

I've got the same card in my Mac pro tower with OSX 10.6.6,

Clocked to the Lavry AD/WC, works perfectly sync'd to digital 1 input.

latest driver here as well.

But it was working great on 10.5.8 previously.

Btw which DAW software?

Oh yeah check your Apple Audio/Midi Setup config as well.

Thank you for your thoughts Jerry. I really appreciate it... good to know that theoretically it should work with my system.

I've been in touch with technical support at Lynx and I am sending the card and cables back for repair/replacement. Did some tests and it looks like it may be defective after all.

Hopefully the new set will clear up my problems...
