DIY progress + some pictures
« on: March 18, 2007, 04:36:42 pm »

As promised here I've done some visual documentation of the 'Making of'
of my mixing room for your amusement.

First photos: here

I've started a little late (Jan 2007 instead of Oct 2006) and could only work
in the evenings + during weekends, so it needed a bit longer.

Some (not visible) details:

It's all modular. The front corner traps are 3 elements (32" height) stapled.
Each element has its own wooden frame, so they can easily be moved (you
never know what might happen with the cables inside the wall, or the outer
wall might get moist or whatever).

Same for the back wall, on each side of the cabinet are 4 elements
(40"x20"x24") behind the fabric.

It's still work in progress (ceiling in the back not finished, diffusers missing, etc.,
but initial tests showed that the room sounds much better, especially the low
end.
And what's most important, the sweet spot has increased from 2" or 3" or so
to 40" and more.

A big thank you to Fran and Ethan and whoever else provided the information
I used for that DIY project.

Tom

PS: YES, my favorite color is orange.

Way to go Tom.. looks like you've done some nice work! Everybody notice that he's actually done some reasonably deep bass trapping... and that it works! Good job and thanks for keeping us (all) in the loop.

ps: I like orange too, and I see you didn't forget the all important Lava Lamps! (yes two are better than one.. symmetry and all that!)

Thanks Fran, coming from you that means a lot to me.

BTW, when I told my wife what I plan to do (and HOW much space of
my studio I wanted to give up for trapping) she thought I'd gone
crazy, but she's happy with the result as it is now.
Conclusion: choosing the right color increases the WAF a lot!

I've just browsed your site (again) and noticed that you prefer
'warm' colors. Great.
And while I'm at it, you've created some really beautiful rooms,
functional and still very tasteful.
If I'd ever record piano I'd like to do it in rooms like this one:

A real beauty!
