Sony PCM 1630, AES out
« on: March 14, 2007, 03:18:10 PM »

Hey,

I'm looking for a way to get an AES output from our newly acquired PCM 1630.  Hoping that someone can point me to a Sony DABK 1631 card for sale or can recommend some other (budget) SDIF-2 to AES converter.

Years ago Audio & Design had a converting box from SDIF2 to AES. That box worked very well with the 1630. This box must be somewhere to find. Also Weiss Engineering bw102 system can handle SDIF2 to AES, but is discontinued and still quite expensive on the 2nd hand market.

Lexicon LFI-10, Apogee UV1000, Sony SBM K-1203 will all convert SDIF <> AES. I've seen the Lexicon on ebay for a decent price.

All you need is the DABK card that replaces the D/A converter and makes the left channel analog output an AES stream.  They should be easier to find that the other options.

I think this'll work, but don't know where to get one, perhaps AID (Audio Intervisual Design) in Los Angeles.

Hey,

Thanks for the replies.  Really hope to pick up the 1631 option card for the 1630, but the LFI sounds like the next best option.  Thanks for the tip I forgot about that box.

If you want to go the less expensive route these units are not bad at all http://www.behringer.com/SRC2496/index.cfm?lang=ENG we use them for conversion between toslink and AES/EBU but you can also use them from SPDIF to AES/EBU and they work and work well. FWIW

Hi Thomas,

Small point: Tom's 1630 needs SDIF to AES conversion, not S/PDIF to AES.

I used to use two Tascam interfaces back to back: One with TDIF <-> AES and the other, SDIF <-> TDIF. Ugly and stupid, but it worked...

We used to use a Lexicon LFI-10 Dig. Audio Format Konverter to konvert from SDIF-2 to AES and backwards. It works perfectly and I still have one for sale at 300,00 EUR. Cheers, Don Pedro

Sonic made a box too... although that was SDIF to optical... and then you'd need an optical to AES box as well....

That's what I have on mine and it works fine... and anyone with an old sonic system is bound to have those boxes floating around....

get Don's LFI-10 and be done with it.

if there's a problem you have someone to complain to   Laughing

that's what I used on my old 1610 to get AES into the old sonic usp. worked flawlessly.

can't say I miss the 1610 or the USP at this point in time...
