Lacquer Channel Mastering Converter Shoot-Out
« on: October 07, 2011, 06:15:23 PM »

So, here is our version of a converter shoot-out. We used what we had and threw in a couple curve-balls.

Source: 1/2" 30ips Ampex. mid-90s rock band recorded at a world class studio in Ottawa, Canada on an amazing Neve console to 24 track 2" Studer.

The source was run through a Dangerous Master, Muth Bax EQ, Sontec MEQ, Manley Vari-Mu and a Maselec MP2 for some subtle mastering and level adjustment so we could listen to a mastered track not just a straight transfer from tape. The settings were unchanged for all converters. No digital limiting or processing was used other than the conversion itself.

Here is the list of Converters:

1. dCS 905 w/ internal clock
2. dCS 905 w/ dCS 992 Master Clock
3. Burl B2 w/ internal clock
4. Burl B2 w/ dCS 992 Master Clock
5. Lavry Gold w/ internal clock
6. Prism AD2 w/ internal clock
7. Apogee PSX w/ internal clock
8. Tascam 24bit DAT w/ internal clock

Here are the files. All are 24bit. You can download individually or all of them as a zip file: http://db.tt/JCQp362l

Please let us know which ones you like best and why.

The only other thing to note is that a Waves L2 was put on the Apogee and Tascam to adjust their wacky levels.

Very interesting :-)

I have lowered all files 0f .5dB to avoid intersample peaks, my meter recognizes them....
External clocking seems to add some artifacts in the highs range for all converters....jitter?
I have both prism and lavry and know them quite well, prism for its clarity and linear response and lavry for tapey and clipping resistance :-D
Burl and DCS are a nice surprice, above all Burl for its cost!
My preferred?
I want them alllll :-D
