Producer/Engineer Management?
« on: March 07, 2007, 04:59:02 PM »

It seems that all of my favorite Producers and Engineers have managers.

Part of the reason they get so many great gigs and work so consistently might be because they have devoted managers. However, I think it's also be safe to assume that they have managers because they work so consistently and get so many great gigs!

Is it one of those catch 22's?

I'm wondering what other members think:

At what point should a Producer or Engineer think about getting a manager or management team, if they want to take their freelance work to the next level?

I assume that a younger guy like myself, whose only Major Label work is as an assistant, should develop his own career further before looking for management. I like the idea of someone who isn't me shamelessly promoting my work and talking about money, so I don't have to!

"if you are in a studio, making a record but you find yourself spending 50% of your time returning phonecalls to people that that want to hire you so that you are not doing your job, then you got something to manage."
Matthew Freeman
I think that is a good quote...

And it's a nice goal to have for one selves as a young engineer/producer/  Rolling Eyes / Very Happy  /.
To keep working at the craft getting the best gigs you can, cutting through all the red tape, and do as much as you can to get some momentum and then, if youre doing well, let someone else organize the best giggs you can get.
That's my plan anyways...
I don't think just getting someone to manage you will get you any "further".
but I might be wrong..
