C12 and N12 serial numbers
« on: September 21, 2011, 10:52:13 PM »

Hello!

Is here a correlation between C12 serial numbers and their respective power supplies?  For example, if a C12 has a serial number 1500 (or whatever) and a power supply has a serial number 1493, or 1511 or some other number close to 1500, would that be more likely to be the original power supply sold with that particular C12?  conversely, is it unlikely that a mic with a SN 1500 and a PS with a SN 750 were sold together?

Donn,

The relationship between AKG tube mics and serial numbers is tenuous.

There was little order in AKG's serial number method, and, unlike with ELA M mics, even less in terms of the power supply number sequences and relationships to the mics they were fitted to.

You have a better chance in identifying period-correctness by dating electronic components, circuitry features and external appearance. And, unlike most other vintage mics, AKG stamped the power supply date of manufacture with an ink stamp on the side of the p.s. frame, visible once you take the cover off.
