Yeah. That desk was in Australia for quite a long time...then sold on Ebay, repaired by Dave Kulka's people and then to APE. The "missing 2/3rds" were scattered to the winds and Brian Kehew now has 2 of those pre's. More type 78. I didn't know about the "Crime Of The Century" connection though.

Does anyone know what desk was in Wally Heider III around 1969?

I happen to be working at Harry J's studio in Kingston, Jamaica.  They had a custom built console which is still here (in storage), would you like to have a picture of that one.

As a side note; many classic records were made on this console including several by Bob Marley and the Wailers.

When Lenny had his down here a few years ago (sounded "not-so-good," by the way) it still had the Island Studios Basing Street plaque on it.  Is that one of the ones you have?

Good time to set the record straight on THAT desk at THAT time. Before Henry had it, it was installed in a NYC building that was God's own private magnate for RF. To try and fight it, there was a horrible kludge of shielding "installed" and it did, indeed, make an audio mess of things. That console has since been sent to the UK for a complete re-build, then on to Japan. The Olympic Desk that was at Waterfront was parted out and some of THAT one went to Japan. The black Helios that Henry now has at the Edison came (most recently) from Mushroom here in Canada. It was also completely rebuilt before installation and that one is amazing sounding! There are a few photos floating about of a black type 69 desk with horrible garish red and yellow knobs all over it. That's the one....with black knobs now.

Was that the Japanese producer's studio?

A very weird room.
And it really did NOT sound so great in there... the desk really was less than impressive.
In fact, I remember people cooing over it, and then I listened to something through it and sort of shrugged.

I've really liked some Helios desks (The Manor, Apple, Lansdowne) but this one wasn't all that impressive.

Interesting that maybe it had been buggered somehow.

they also had an ATR 124 in there that also seemed oddly not quite right.

I know that I have inquired in the past, but does anyone have any info or photos of the Musicland desk? It seems inconceivable to me that there is so little historical info about this console, considering all of the amazing recordings that were made at Musicland. Sadly, I do believe it was broken up and parted out, but I'd like to know for sure.
Anyone?

That's the one. It got even weirder in there. They actually tried hanging a copper mesh on the entire wall surface...ceilings, floor...to create a huge Faraday cage around it all. The grounding plan was byzantine and had it's own schematic. Craziness. They finally gave up and move the whole gubbins to Japan....but yeah, that poor desk was hobbled.

It's an interesting problem to consider. I've done a lot of dance pieces in NYC and lived there part time for many years, but I don't remember any particular problems with RF beyond the usual urban thing. Is it an issue? Maybe that studio was right next door to a transmitter.

Hey JJ. Lots of shots of that desk, but it's NOT original completely. The pre's out of that little fella are with Tony Arnold, some of his repros are in there now. Looks mighty pretty though! Mike Castoro owns that one.
