Will somebody please give Randy Newman a freaking Oscar?
« on: February 25, 2007, 11:32:49 PM »

I mean, come on!  This guy is the Susan Lucci of the Oscars.  17 nominations and ZERO wins.  Who does he have to blow to win a freaking statue?

I DID think this year's songs were all entirely unremarkable.

Melissa Etheridge's being CLEARLY the best one.

Randy has won an Oscar.

Now if you could wish a Grammy for me and get me one just that quickly, I'd be satisfied (for today -- which ends in 35 minutes).

Oops.  They only mentioned his seventeen noms and not his win.

I didn't like any of the songs, btw.

I must say I was really happy to see Sound Editors & Sound Mixers given "on camera" awards & recognition on the show this year, don't remember the last time that happened. Maybe us audio geeks matter after all!

The special award for composer Ennio Morricone was great as well, been a big fan of his for over 40 years.

i agree.

William, I knew sooner ot later we had to agree on something:)

And btw for you non-film/TV folks, the award for best song is supposed to be based on how well it serves the pciture, not necesssarily how great a song it is away from the picture.

And in an era when songs are rather gratuitously thrown in to amortize the cost of the movie this is even more challenging.

Uh, yeah.  Whatever you say.

CLEARLY it sucked, and hugely so.  My God, that was an AWFUL song.

It was the worst of the five, and the race wasn't even close.

You liked that drivel?

I'm not sure I'm ready to say Randy Newman got screwed, but basically, all four other songs got screwed.  Melissa Etheridge hasn't written a song worth a shit since her first album, which was terrific.

I liked it more than the other completely forgettable ones.

The Dreamgirls songs SOUNDED like filler material.
And the Randy Newman was serviceable but nothing special.

Melissa was the best of a bad bunch.

Hey, it could've been worse.

A couple of years ago, the tune from "A Mighty Wind" was nominated, and was beaten by that borrrring Enya thing from "Bored Of The Rings."  Harrrumph.

No, you detect someone who has high songwriting standards being disgusted by the fact that someone with your credentials would fawn all over a piece of shit song like that.

Next time you'd like to put homophobia on ME, Bill, consider the idea that maybe some of us judge the music on the basis of. . . bear with me, here . . . the music.

You're better than that, and you know it.  And don't even fucking dare deny exactly what you tried to do.

Yes, I am pissed off.  True colors, indeed.
