Massey's deesser is now available.  http://www.masseyplugins.com/?page=deesser

The S-less description made me smile Smile

"Hate S's with a fiery paion!"
Sounds like it employs some mean subatomic particle...
A tpyo in their plug's title catchphrase may not bode well for their code, at least initially. But I'm sure most would agree re treading lightly, transparently, rather than needing to inject a fiery anything.

And no car should really need seatbelts...

A growing part of mastering is fixing things captured by cheap microphones that aren't noticed on cheap speakers. Essey mixes reaching the mastering stage are often a result of both.

At some point, one's talent is only as good as one's ability to hear what's happening.

The S's are removed because it's a deesser plug-in. It's not a typo.  Get it?  I thought it was pretty clever.  This plug-in is as transparent as it gets outside of a DS1 IMO.  I've tried all the others and they all do ok, but I think Massey nailed it.

Sounds promising indeed.

Say, have you compared it to the Eiosis ES Deesser?

Yes, actually.  I thought it sounded pretty good, though it was difficult to figure out at times. When I demo'd it, I was using AVOX SYBIL most of the time and ended up sticking with SYBIL because it sounded a hair more transparent to me and was 100X easier to tweak.

However, I think Massey's Deesser is even easier to tweak with the null listen mode and sounds even better than SYBIL.  I was really surprised how well it grabbed S's off a vocal in a master without me going into MS processing.  I've also used it on a spoken word and it also tackles that pretty well.

I'm pretty happy with the Massey plug-in at this point and I think the next step is a Weiss DS1 (which is in the queue behind new monitors and a new compressor at this point).

When mastering studios were a tape machine a lathe and a level control the only mandatory piece of processing was a de esser. An EQ was less important.

If you think the Eiosis is complex to tweak wait until you see the Weiss DS-1 with Mk3 software. My first time in front of the DS-1 was frightening, all those different release knobs & now with dual mono, scalable RMS or Peak detection & M-S thrown in for good measure it's capable of some amazing tricks once you learn it's intricacies.

Regarding the Massey, I wouldn't use it in it's current state, the delay is there even with band split mode & to me it was a deal breaker. In fact I'd prefer the standard Waves De-Esser over the Massey. I haven't tried the Eiosis but a friend whose ears I trust said it was amazing. Compared to everything I've tried the Weiss DS-1 is in another league altogether.

this seems to be an old  but useful thread and i seem to be a little confused.

i have been chasing sibalance down  for all of my adult working life and the solution i have come to is the same as when we cut vinyl  and rode the acceleration limiter on every word.
for a sibilent track i just  go in on sadie and cut  the front every offending s.p or t  down by between 1-4 db - no eq  just level
it works a treat every time takes about 3-4 mins a track , and sounds normal
which is something i have never heard a desser do

why isn't everybody doing this ?

What about hi-hats or cymbals? Sometimes a track has way too much sibilance or bursts of HF content throughout to warrant the time to manually automate it. Trust me Rick with the DS-1 Mk3 you just set the threshold & forget about it.
