Didn't really know where to post this, but since Steve is a guy I respect, I figured here might be the most appropriate place - wont bitch and moan if it gets moved though!

Anyway. Which drum mics should our band get? We've got a budget of around

Hey there and welcome.  There are a lot of good threads on micing ideas for drums, and if you do a search, you will find a bunch of info.  Did you want to throw out a general budget for starters, however?

With that kind of budget I think I'd just get one chinese large diaphragm condenser (maybe an MXL... I don't personally like them, but the price is right) and make it work.

Reposition it around the kit until things sound balanced, and maybe use the 57 and 58 as accent mics if necessary.

Basically, keep it simple.

Is this for recording or sound reinforcement?

If it's for live sound, maybe this isn't the way to go...

Are you gonna use the mics live or in the studio?
I would look for a AKG D112 or a Shure SM7 (for the bass drum), as Fox says, one (or preferably two) cheap-but-good large diaphragm condensers.
Try out a few mics in a shop and if they are too expensive, look for them on ebay.
If you want mics for every single drum, you have to either save up ur buy something that you might regret.

I recently picked up a CAD drum pack which includes 3 clip-on tom mics, 1 clip-on snare mic, 1 kick mic and 2 short pencil condensers for overheads or hats. Cost was $150 canadian. They work for live and you can make them work for studio until you can afford better mics.

really? I didn't know that CAD made a drum pack. I'm always surprised at how usable their mics are. They are almost never my first choice, but I can use them in a pinch. Good stuff for the money.

Are these the CAD mics you're on about? They seem like a really good deal.

Lets face it: We're a band recording our own demos. I don't expect to hit the quality of Tool's Lateralus or Pelicans "The Fire In Our Throats..." album...

We expect to get a demo, not a professional album. We want to use the demo to get gigs at the middle echelon venues (hopefully we can skip the dingy pubs and get a support slot with a good band)

Gigs aren't the primary reason for recording though, we'd just like to record an EP that we can then ship around to various friends and bands, just to develop a following I guess.

1. We are recording in a home studio environment.
2. We already have access to two SM58's and an SM57.

I personally think the pack above would be the best idea, since it fits nicely into our budget and gives us everything we need.

But if there any better ideas you can give me, I'm happy to hear them!
