The Fake Classical Pianist

for the weird story of  the week....anyone see this from Gramphone?

Masterpieces Or Fakes? The Joyce Hatto Scandal   February 15 2007

It was already one of the strangest stories the classical music world had witnessed. But the discovery of the late English pianist Joyce Hatto as the greatest instrumentalist almost nobody had heard of, appears to have taken a bizarre, even potentially sinister turn.

It was around a year ago that Gramophone

There's nothing like a scandal and a mystery -- especially in the world of classical music!

What I want to know is, how did the artist (Bronfman for instance) compare to himself as Hatto?  In other words, did critics like one better than the other -- Bronfman as Bronfman and Hatto as Bronfman.  That would be most telling if the reviews were very different.

I had an idea about a yamaha disklavier grand...

since classical pianists nowadays are judged more on speed and clarity than anything else, wouldn't it be great to record an album of classical virtuoso music with a disklavier and have some pretty girl front it?

The late composer/comedian/author Steve Allen used to get decent reviews, but never great ones regarding his playing.

As an experiment, he created the character of an elderly black gentleman who was a "recent discovery".  This man played the piano and was promoted as "a real find".  To complete the project, Steve put a photo of a suitable looking black guy on the cover and sent the record out to the critics.  Sure enough, they ate it up and couldn't say enough good things.  Of course their embarrassment was great when they found out later it was Steve.

May I speculate that Rolling Stone magazine was leading the charge?

Well, they're getting ready to make a movie about milli vanilli...

Another big one was that gal from Flashdance not doing her own dancing.  Then there is the Hollywood use of "butt doubles" for sex scenes.

That story is almost impossible to believe.  Did no reviewer notice the sonic similarities to existing recordings?  Those must have been some mighty obscure records they copied!  Did nobody else notice the inconsistent artist/composition information imbedded into the recording?  Did only one person notice that a piece had been stretched 15 percent?

Excuse me . . . 15 PERCENT ???

Crimony!  That's a giant leap from "alternate tuning"!!!

"By God, they must have employed computers for their dasterdly deeds!" In the movie it's going to be a big scope with waveforms going everywhere on it.

I'm gonna re-release Nevermind under my bands name. But first I'm gonna timestretch it out about 12%. Should give me a few years of cash before the scientitions catch up with me.

oh yeah, the baroque joke was funny.

Extremely interesting.  Tho' he's not gotten away with the deception, oddly he may pay no penalty.  Is that the perfect crime?

Hmmmm.

You don't know it, but you've hit the nail right on the head about me.

Perhaps I should have said "When I was a violinist"....

... my former life.

The tricky thing is, when you go to music school... everyone wants you to learn to be technical and precise, but noone wants you to be passionate about your music.  I think most people are, but then the stuffed musical shirts beat it out of you with scalebooks and the proverbial measuring stick.

I'm flattered that you would re-read what I wrote, and I appreciate what you're trying to say.  I'll always be a musician in my heart, but performing for a living is just too hard.  Maybe that's why I like being on the other side of the glass.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I am going to go home and dust off the ol' guitar....

Thanks Bill.
