a versatile mix.
« on: February 16, 2007, 03:42:26 PM »

just finished a mix that sounds great on my full range speakers, but doesn't translate to smaller ones. I guess I need to balance the treble in the tracks better.  I guess mixes have to be a compromise between what works on small speakers and full range systems.

How do you guys know where to draw the line?  When you are EQing a guitar, how do you decide how much bass to dip so that the mix sounds good on all references?  do you just have to keep switching references at every stage of the mix?

do i need to start my mix over?

I make it sound good on ONE set of speakers (usually loud), then George Marino makes it translate to the rest of the world.

I usually toggle between flat and boosted frequencies on a couple of pairs of speakers. Alot of listeners tend to boost/ megabass switch the stereos, so that always gives a perspective of how exaggerated it can get. I never mix (or master) something without having the exaggerated bass response, at least as an occasional reference. Headphones, the car stereo reference mix, etc....this all helps. It's sort of horrific at times taking it onto the car stereo, but like it or not, that's where the mixes will be listened to a good portion of the time by people.
