Not a fan of the Lawson 47 on anything that requires low end.  Very deficient in that regard, unless they have corrected that in the last year or so.

Here's the new sleeper, guys: Chameleon Labs TS-1 tube SDCs.  I've recently ben testing these and they are awesome on drum OH and piano (the only things I've tested so far).  I'm REALLY impressed.  The MSRP is only $499 each, too!  Go get a pair of these things now.  I'm serious.  I did a spaced pair with the omni capsules on the piano, and it was glorious.

There are many choices for pres.  You need to try them for yourself and see if they meet your needs.

I concur with getting a pair of Dakings.  You'll also have a great set of EQs.  You can see these on eBay sometimes for around a grand each.  A terrific value.

We part company on the U87s, though, which I consider the most overrated mic in history.  They are versatile, but never anywhere as good as other choices for those applications.

Find a pair of Langevin CR3As.  They kick the crap out of U87s and you'll have a grand left over.  (Actually, you might wind up paying more like $1,200 for the Dakings.)  Don't know if they have gone up or not, but I got mine for a grand.

You could probably get a pair of Dakings and a pair of Gefell UM-70s, which is what I'd do.

or see if you can find a used UM900 and one Daking.

I recently used a pair of Rode NT's and a universal Audio 6176 and liked the results. Ya can get that setup for about $3g. With the extra grand leftover you could maybe grab API EQ's

NT what?  They are all NT something.

(Except the Classic II, the best one, and the K2, the almost best one.)

There's a big difference between an old NT-1 or 2, and a new NT-2000, for instance.
