although for the most point i would say those "extended bass" functions on consumer stereos are a wild pot shot a just filling in a chunk of the low end that they didn't want to spend the money building into the speakers in the first place.  same with the treble function.  just cheaply trying to force high end through cheap tweeters.  People think they are enhancing the sound and adding bass and trebel, but really they are just trying to coax cheap gear into replacing some of the frequency response that they inherently lack.

I can't listen to mastered material with a bass boost or POS boombox expander

let alone check mixes on one

I understand why Terry would think much of this advice is spurious, but I offer it as steps in understanding the types of things people can do as tricks, which will hopefully help further them in their grasp of using the tools that pros use, even if they are chaper versions of them.

It allows them to spec things that they might want to spec, and at least start with a bit of knowledge.  Although they say a bit of knowledge is dangerous, it is also how we get started.

"Widening effect" is just Stereo imaging, and a trick that I will happily admit should be left to pros in a perfect world, but for folks to understand how a lot of hip-hop mixes take advantage of this type of thing, they kind of have to try it for themselves.

Sorry if it seems I am arming the kids with shotguns, but the smart ones won't shoot themselves, and the rest is just culling the herd.

i find these loudness-buttons very handy although i would never listen to music with them engaged.

but the better the mix, the lesser this will change the balance of it.

as for your mix:

turn that lead vocal up! (very very loud) and then you'll hear where the extra low end and overly loud snare can go.

this has actually been the best advice given to me (for hiphop / beat based music)

i mean i'm really not a professional and to actually give advice on this forum makes me fell funny... but i'm into this and at least it gets me halfway there.

hope it helps

Here's a foolproof method for making sure you have enough low end in your mix. You gotta have NS10's though.

1-Increase your monitoring level until the amp is gently clipping.
2-Increase the bass elements in the mix until the woofers in the NS10's blow.
3-Lower the bass elements in the mix 1.5 dB
4-Replace woofers in NS10's
5-Rinse and repeat.

sounds like a great plan.

but better yet, keep borrowing NS10's from everyone you know and when they blow, throw them in the trash.

Never throw NS10's in the trash; not when you can sell them for 3 times what you paid for them on ebay.

you have to learn your system. your on the right track by asking the question. it takes years of listening and that little problem you hear on your speakers translates into bigger probs other places. you can mix great on almost any decent system, remember it doesnt have to sound great in the studio, it has to sound great everywhere else. monitor speakers do end up sounding constricted when you get a great mix, the the looser cones of home speakers and the 4 ohm car systems will amplify any lo dynamics into farting or beautiful bass. and it is a fine line.

the above post is worth printing and pasting on the monitor shelf for your educational period.

I stopped having my educational periods after I turned 50.
