Norah Jones on 60 Minutes
« on: February 12, 2007, 06:32:12 PM »

Norah Jones was on the American television show "60 Minutes" last night and was interviewed by Katie Couric. Most of the segment is available online and you can see it here. If you're a Mac user, I suggest getting the freeware version of the Flip4Mac QuickTime plug-in and watching the Windows Media version of the video.

I was quite surprised to find out who her father is (And, no, it's not Darth Vader).

After watching this, I realize I haven't given her music enough of a chance.

I'm surprised you didn't know as it was very played up when her first record came out.

I thought she came off well in the piece... although it's STILL a puff piece that I can't for the life of me figure WHY it was on 60 Minutes this week.

good publicist.

Yes, Ravi Shankar is still alive.

I can't believe anyone DIDN'T know he was her father.  That's like not knowing that Steven Tyler is Liv Tyler's dad.  (No offense intended, but I honestly think it was emphasized in every story & review of her first record.)

I think she is terrific, and very charming, too.  And then there's her looks, which don't hurt.  Those photos of her as a young girl were stunning -- she was so photogenic, and very "direct" with the camera.  I think she's just a born performer, and talented as well.

Well, Katie Couric was the interviewer, so were you expecting serious journalism? Since CBS News made the decision to hire KC, its brand of reporting is better placed on Entertainment Today than any serious news program.

It's not that I expect different from Katie Couric.

but someone decided that what this week's 60 Minutes NEEDED was a puff piece about Norah Jones and then decided Katie Couric should do it.

I don't think her new record is doing great business and she wasn;t up for a grammy (later that night... NEXT on, in fact) so what was the reason this was this week's important story?

good publicist, I say again.

pitching Norah's new record to the pre-Grammy audience.

I recorded Norah, and was very impressed by her solid musical ability.  She is the "real deal."

The record has scanned over 630K units in it's first 2 weeks (#1 first week and #2 the 2nd week). It has only had a 2 week chart life since release.

It s not like last album that did a million the first week, but what non radio artists does that on a third album, anyway?  Add in a weaker marketplace.....

Big numbers all over the world as well.

I have several friends in key positions on her touring crew, and know her former guitarist Kevin Briet very well, and by all accounts she is a dream to work for/with.

I recorded Norah live-to-two with Marian McPartland for NPR's show Piano Jazz and Norah is a one-take kind of girl.  She sang and played live with ease and was a delight to work with.

I'm sure she's very nice and very talented.

this record is still being very HYPED.

which may not ultimately serve her well.

No doubt, but what artist does the record industry serve well?  (Aside from insanely large sums handed to a few.)

If the record is not "hyped", how is the public supposed to know it's released?
