The newest DAC is very good - ever so slightly 'rounder' than the Lavry, but good. I actually keep both the Lavry and the HEDD DACs hooked up to my Little Labs router so I can listen to stuff through either one to see which one feeds the processing chain better...

I had my HEDD upgraded to the latest rev (v6) converters last year, and I really like it a lot. Very smooth, yet detailed.

I like it better than the Lavry (Blue), better than the Benchmark, it's different than the Mytek (8x192). Not sure if I'd say better or worse, just different.

The Apogee and Prism I haven't heard (recently), so I can't say.

Cheers,
Thor

I have the Lavry (LE4496 "Blue") and recently added a HEDD 192.  I'd say the HEDD gets the most use...  Not that the Lavry is anything to sneeze at by any stretch.

I have never heard all 4 units at the same time however I have heard the HEDD vs Apogee Rosetta and it was a clear win to the HEDD.

I had the Rosetta 200 in for review, and also had a loan Rosetta 800 while my HEDD was being repaired last year. Although I didn't find a radical difference - the Apogees are solid products and my customers were quite happy during that period - I definitely had a 'home again' feeling once the HEDD was back in service as my analogue send and return.

OT: I interviewed Michael Grace of Grace Design the other day, and during the course of the chat he told me that he was commissioned to design power supplies for Apogee in the early days.

hello,

i own a Lavry Blue AD/DA. It is a great converter but i don´t find
the A/D-Saturation useful in the AD Converter. DA sounds good.

Any opinios on that ?

So i will try the HEDD soon for that reason and compare.

greetings

Andreas

I have a Lavry Gold A/D that replaced a Hedd. As good as the Hedd is in the A/D dept., the Gold is more detailed, yet smoother, and quite a bit wider and deeper sounding. If volume is your game, the Hedd could take a bit more level before obviously distorting,(although the Gold is less nasty sounding at high levels right up to the point of cracking, the Hedd gets more harsh than the Gold at high levels, but takes more before it 'cracks')and has a slight amount more punch in the low mids. Kind of a more hi fi Apogee. Over all, I prefer the strengths of the Gold over the strengths of the Hedd, but they are both very high quality.

Hey Dave,

What about the d/a?

I haven't compared to the Apogee, but the d/a in the HEDD is certainly at least on par with the DAC-1.  I haven't done any source/d/a comparisons, but the HEDD absolutely has more low mid muscle than the DAC... which is more accurate to the source I don't know yet.  After owning the HEDD for two years I only last week used its d/a section for the first time!

I use the Blues for D/A and monitor feed. It's been too long since I compared to a Hedd for me to remember. I do know the latest Hedd D/A is very good.
