A question that's been eating away at me.

If it looked like you had a remote chance to master (insert favorite huge artist here)'s new record, would you drop your price to ZERO to get it?

No. I would want them to work with me as much as I would want to work with them (or at least close). If I put in the time and sweat, then they have to put something in too. It shows me that i'm worth it and they value my time as much as I value their art.

I can't imagine I'd need to and I can't imagine they'd expect it.

Maybe.  But I can't imagine why any (insert favorite huge artist) wouldn't be able to pay for mastering.  If it's a situation where this person just doesn't need to, well, that's just taking advantage.  In that case, I would probably agree with Michael.

Unless, of course, it was just too cool to pass up.   Very Happy

Look, I know it's mean.  But sometimes the end justifies the mean.

Nope.

Possibly I'd do a track on spec to try to get the gig... but if they want me to master the whole record, they pay for it.

My #1 rule: all clients get the same treatment from me... I don't care if it's the kids down the street or Madonna....

Only if for charity.  Otherwise, it's bidness.

Regardless of who it is they pay, except if it is for a favor. But even then if you do too much of that sort of thing, then it is either expected all the time or at the very least undervalued.

No major profile artist should take a free mastering. I would lose respect for them immediately. And what happens if you do it and then discover it won't be used?

Major egg on your face and more importantly an even bigger waste of time. You can make up the $$$$ you miss out on but you will never be able to replace those hours or even day.

Mark IF this is a real scenario is facing you please don't do it. A man of your character and reputation is WAY above that.

No.  This thought came from watching how rates are imploding and competition is growing.  I look at some of the rates of studios today, and not just mastering rooms, and I think, these guys could make more working in a fast food joint.  The question blossomed from there.  How much is ego involved, how much is "star" quality involved, etc.

I'll do someone a favor once in a blue moon, but my craft has a value.

Thanks for the guidance.

This is not about mastering, but on topic nevertheless.

I remember back in the old Swemix days (that is, before Denniz Pop left and formed Cheiron) when Denniz Pop and Stonebridge worked together producing and remixing. This was some fifteen years ago or so. Cheiron had just begun their way towards fame.

They both kept dreaming about one day getting their hands on the original master tapes for Chic, and how great that would be. They'd even do it for free, just to get to lift stuff from the tape for their own private pleasure.

One day I was at this party at Stonebridge's house, and he was so revved up because he had finally managed to score a deal to remix and get hold of those tapes. He couldn't wait to tell Denniz Pop.

The minute Denniz Pop and Max Martin walked through the door, Stonebridge told him. Denniz first response was "do I get any points?". Stonebridge replied "No, but man... It's Chic! The master tapes! Oh dude, our dream come true!". Denniz just kept saying he needed points to do it.

Stonebridge was very crestfallen that night, over this. Denniz Pop was one of the most wonderful personalities in the business, God rest his soul. So this was not at all expected.

It all cleared up after a magnum bottle of wine and a lot of singing the lyrics of Dr. Alban "Choosing BPM is a big problem".

In the end I think we all would like to work with someone we dig bad enough to do it for free, but in reality when that day comes it's probably going to be because they value your job and will pay for it.

To be honest, I don't know. I value my own time very highly and outside of charity work do nothing for free, but if Pink Floyd decided to do one more record (especially if it included RW) and I even got the chance to do it I might indeed consider doing it for free...

It has nothing to do with the state of the industry - it has everything to do with the honor of working with some of the artists that are the reason I do what i do.

at times.  It's more about business in general.
