Comparing Icynene to Owens Corning 703 2"
« on: January 28, 2007, 09:09:21 PM »

 Hi all,

We are building 2 14x16' control rooms and booths and we are planning to use quite a bit of OC 703 2" for the room treatments. My contractor mentioned that maybe since we are spraying the walls with Icynene (spray foam insulation). Maybe we could stretch fabric over the lycene rather than using OC703 2". I have not seen this Icynene yet so i have no idea if this can work. From the info it likely will not provide enough low frequency absorption but i'd love to know if anyone has looked into this and made any solid conclusions.

this info came for here:  http://www.beickerinsulation.com/Icynene-Questions-and-Answe rs.html

Quote:

Acoustical Properties
Performance in a 2"x4" wood stud wall:
STC Sound Transmission Class - 37
Hz. Freq. 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000
ASTM E90 19 30 31 42 38 46
NRC Noise Reduction Coefficient - 70
Hz. Freq. 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000
ASTM C423 .11 .43 .89 .72 .71 .67

Note the last line -- performance per unit area isn't as good as standard absorbers, but the flip side of this argument is that it would be trivially easy to achieve a LOT of absorbing area.  Just leave off the sheetrock and hang fabric!  Interesting idea.

The performance dip above 500 Hz could likely be offset with some carpet or drapes.  The biggest problem I see is in the low end, because it's going to take some trapping to improve what is essentially no absorption below 250 Hz.  You may find out that the performance of 2" 703 in the mids and highs is good enough once you get the amount on the walls you need for low frequency smoothness.

Thanks JimmyJazz,

I appreciate your input.
I'd really love to hear from Fran and Ethan with their take on this stuff.

Any chance fellas?

Thanks

Aye, there's the rub. If they offer no acoustic data, that's a good tip-off that it's more useful for thermal insulation than sound absorption.

These STC and NRC numbers are not very impressive... keep with the stuff that works given this as an option (IMHO)..
