Author Topic: I need to do a "clean install" How do I retain my passwords, etc?  (Read 3189 times)

I intend to purchase a new hard drive and do a clean install of OSX 10.4, but I shudder to think that I won't be able to restore all of my passwords, iChat stuff, e-mails address books, etc.

Is there a method? I have used 'carbon copy cloner" in the past to duplicate my current system on a new drive, but now I need to start from scratch, as I was informed that some of my system problems are due to updating from earlier OSX versions....

Any advice?

If you backup everything with carbon copy or superduper
after you install 10.4 and startup it will prompt you to see if you want to transfer your home folder(or something like that)
basically it allows you to transfer back all your data
and
by the way
I have done a superdupe into a brand new hard drive flawlessly
from a bootable backup

Ross is right
when you do the install
it will bring up the migration tool
which will ask if you want to transfer documents
and/or accounts, settings etc...
however
when installing the os
it is a good idea to disconnect all firewire drives from
the computer
but when the migration tool comes up
plug in the fw drive
with your
clone on it
back in

the issues are that any appl pro apps, like dvd studio pro or final cut pro CANNOT be migrated THEY must be installed clean and new
the other issue
is
any plug-in or virutal instrument that uses a computer id
for its authorization process
will be lost
the auth process uses a combo of the hardwar and sofwtare to generate a unique id
you will have to do the whole auth process over again

one thing I thought of is that "clean install" is a windows term these days.

there is no option for a "clean install" in OS X

only Erase and Install or Archive and Install.

Actually, OSX installs a huge heap of things you will probably never use. If nothing else, there's like a gig worth of Garageband loops and other things in the libraries.

Then again, you're absolutely correct regarding not having to turn lots of things off or run some kind of "tweak software" right after you installed the operating system just to have a stable system.

Yes, but OS X does give you the option of some of the extraneous things you can include or leave out.

It is also a decent idea before you install to do a 'zero format' of the hard drive.  This will map out any bad sectors for the disk directory (if there are any) and possibly save you a heap of trouble down the road.

Also when doing an install, you do have the option to import your information from another disc partition.  So keep the old disc drive in the computer with the new one.
