PSP releases Vintage Warmer v2.0
« on: January 15, 2007, 01:39:30 PM »

PSP VintageWarmer 2 (plug-in AudioUnit, VST, RTAS for Mac OSX (universal Binary); VST, DirectX, RTAS for Windows; VST, RTAS and MAS for Mac OS Classic) is a high-quality digital simulation of an analog-style, a single- or multi-band compressor/limiter. It combines rich, warm analog processing with a straightforward user interface, and comes with a comprehensive library of presets. The plug-in processor is highly flexible and can be used for both softknee compression and brick-wall limiting. This makes it an essential tool for mixing and mastering engineers. Careful attention has been paid to PSP Vintage Warmer's overload characteristics with the processor being capable of generating saturation effects typical of analog tape recorders. PSP Vintage Warmer also incorporates professional VU and PPM metering together with accurate overload indicators thereby assuring professional quality results.

The new PSP VintageWarmer2 adds the following exciting features:

FAT (Frequency Authentication Technique) - PSP's quality double-sampled processing,
Disengageable brick-wall limiting,
Two Release Multiplier ranges for fast or relaxed processing,
Semi-automated release mode,
Extended band saturation levels and band release multipliers for MultiBand mode,
64-bit host<>plug-in audio streaming support in VST version,
Platform-independent preset management system.

After Nebula 2 it will be hard for every new plug to reach its masterclass. Besides of Neon HR I have never been impressed by a single PSP plug. The Mastercomp was also quite good, but why should I use it if it wasn

I dunno... the VW was cool when it came out, but always a tad "furry" for my tastes, and the issues got odder as you pushed.  The improvements, esp the FAT and 64 bit path support, are not small things.  Functional improvements in release behavior addresses its biggest weakness as a comp, and the disengagable brickwall is another useful addition.

The VW has always been about the color, and while the original tended to put it in your face, precision and experience might tame this tendency (certainly the added control hint at this intent).  It's been a bit of a one-trick pony, but this might help it find some other uses.

I actually prefer the VW to many tools when I've needed something akin to multiband limiting.  If you didn't push too hard, it did great things, esp w/hiphop.  Cleaner calculation (closer to Mastercomp) and greater control might be just the ticket.  The VW has seemed long in the tooth for awhile now, and didn't stand up well next to MC and Neon.  This could be a really good thing if it results in a colorful mastercomp-like limiter.  I'm intrigued.  When I have time I'll demo it.

I know what you mean when you say "furry". I always described it as "gritty," but not in a cool, analog way, but in a distinctly digital way that bothered me. I couldn't ignore it once I detected it. Regardless, even if it never seems "warm" to me, it has uses.

That said, I just received some mixes that the engineer said were treated with VW and honestly, I thought they sounded great (they were not peak limited, thankfully). As with any device/plug, it's all in how you use it.

I use it here daily and it is a great plugin for mixing. Kick, Toms, Overheads, Room Ambience, a few rythm guitars, percussion .

People should try the VM2.  With the FAT feature added, it's really darned nice.  Reminds me of the EL Fatso, actually.
