So, I have acces to this space, center of Madrid. A 20 square meter basemente, about 3m high ceilings. Tomorrow I'll try to post a drawing of the space. Is kind of rectangular, 6,5x3,5m.

I don´t have to pay any rent here, and I´m wondering if a place this big can be used to build a studio (mini-studio) with separate control room and recording space. I´ve given up on recording a full band at the same time, now I just ask myself if this would be enough to get in there a drum kit comfortably. I´m giving priority to the booth over the control room...

Anyone has done something in a place so small? can this be done?

why not just do away with the control room and have one room? records have been made in a such a fashion before (brian eno?) May take some getting used to, but you'd maximize the space

I agree. Keep it as one room. With the size your dealing with that makes the most sense.
What good is a seperate control room if your monitoring drums that are in a small predictable room.
Make sure you address bass traping.
No rent though . you can't ask for much more than that.

I would agree with the single room approach.
Then concentrate on keeping any noisy gear isolated and think about some good isolation screens that can be moved into place for drumkit/vocals/gtr etc

If you keep the ceiling well damped and have plenty diffusion it could work well.

If you try and make seperate rooms you are going to get very close to a cube shaped room situation.

To be honest with you, my concern with the one room approach is my ears. If I keep it as one room, I´d have to be there while tracking the drums, and either I get one heavy duty ear protectors or i get out of there, and I don´t like the idea of running away from the musician...

Anyway, the more I think about it the more sense it makes. But I still doubt, the cool look of a separate control is powerful. Getting rid of some cliches in your head is complicated, sometimes.

Function is the key, I guess.

why don't you just buy some nice isolating headphones for ear protection? there should be a few around that fit your needs

Yeah, I´ve decided to go with a one room design. I´ll try to get pictures of the process of building the place, and get ear defenders.

Could be custom.
I imagine that thin birch ply would be easy to work into that shape.
If you had them filled with some sort of absorbant material they could be useful as diffusors.

I want to try those Linn monitors though.
